I had time this weekend to work on the frag tank stand w/ a buddy. It's made of 2x4's and 2x6's w/simpson hangers. I have a friend who's selling a used sunlight supply maristar 2x150 and 2x54 watt T5's. I can go w/12k reeflux bulbs, that way the corals will acclimate easier to the main tank (when that gets going !). I'm thinking of going w/ati blue plus bulbs for the T5's.

We also built a ledger out of 2x8's. I hope to put 3-55 gallon tanks up there. I would like to have a mixing station for saltwater, r/o water, & the last will be a gravity fed fuge. I'm entertaining the idea of incorporating a constant water station up there also.

I plan to build another ledger below it for a qt, culture tanks, breeding tanks, & what not.

Wow. That ledger can hold all that? Seems like a lot of shear stress on those lag bolts, but it has been a long time since I've done any load calculations... Pressure test it with a thousand pounds of people!

Gravity fed fuge sounds awesome. I am still trying to figure out how I would pull that one off with my tank without blocking the left side view of my tank. Doing it through-the-wall gives me an idea...

Oh, I'm not done yet ! I still have to run some posts on the sides, put a few more braces, and tie in to the glue lams above. It will be beefy like everything else.
Maybe I can have a few local reefers over to test it out.

I talked to Dave at Aquatic Life yesterday about that HID/T5 fixture. Nice guy and know his stuff. They are trying to bring a fixture that is popular in asia and europe over to the states. I'm just concerned w/the lack of fans and any par measurements on the fixture. I'm going to checkout my friend's sunlight maristar fixture this weekend and see if that isn't a better route to take. My only concern is that it has magnetic ballasts and those can be quite heavy and noisy...We shall see.

$200 does not seem like a bad price for the PF-500 though...

Just checked out the fs thread...nice ! That's a great deal and the skimmer looks in real good shape too boot ! I pm'd him to see if it's still available.

My friend Ed offered me a slightly used H&S in sump 250 skimmer and a used sunlight supply maristar 2 x 150 watt mh/2 x 54 t5 fixture w/blue wave ballast (for frag tank) for $1,700. I also have another guy who's offering a slightly used Bubble King 300 Deluxe or Bubble King Super Marin 300 for $1,300 each.

    What do you think ?

Deltec, H&S, BK - hmmm... all fine choices.

The Deltec and H&S uses the same 2x1260 pumps. H&S rates their skimmer up to 700g, while Deltec's is up to 600 light/450 heavy stocking. Weird that Fin's doesn't have the details on that model...

The BK 300 Deluxe (2009) model is rated for up to 700g, with 2000lph air and 3000lph water. Nice ratio.
The Super Marin 300 is insane. Rated at up to 1050g tank with 3000lph air flow. More power consumption because of the two pumps. Seems like a huge footprint with the pumps. Seems like overkill.

Gotta worry about replacing those $$$ Red Dragon pumps if they break...

These skimmers are really out of my league/off my radar, but I think you'd be happy with any of them as long as they are in good working order. I think I would lean toward the $1300 BK 300 Deluxe (pending actual ratings on model year) rather than the H&S 250 deal. The Deltec AP702(?) seems like a steal @ $650, but has slightly less performance headroom as the BK 300 Deluxe.

The Deltec seems most tempting to me...

Well I can take the deltec 702 out of the equation...that bad boy sold fast !
Kinda like that BK w/self cleaning head for sale...now that was a steal.
I think the BK 300 Deluxe would work out best for my tank also...but that sold already.
The BK SM is 5 months old and comes w/the RD1 pumps...That thing is a BEAST !
I really liked Mojo's reviews in RC and the BK was his favorite hands down.
I just can't believe how quite those things are !

LOL. You really have to ask fast for these things...

Mojo reviewed a BK Mini 160 iIRC. Quite a different skimmer than the Super Marin 300, but the same BK construction quality.

This copy from Aquarium Specialty has slightly more air draw in their specs:

Bubble King Supermarin 300 Internal Skimmer Mininum LPH: 3600 Comes with 2 Red Dragon Pumps Supermarin Ratings: The Bubble King Super Marin 300 is the latest model of Bubble king skimmers, utilizing two Red Dragon pumps. The body is made of 300mm (11 ¾”) Diameter Cast Acrylic & the height of the skimmer is 600mm (23 5/8”). Base plate is 330mm (13”), the actual width by length including the riser pipe is 16”x 13”. Depending on which pump is mounted on which side, the base dimensions will be: 23 7/8” x 20 7/8” Or 21” 7/8” x 24 3/8”
That's an awesome skimmer with a huge footprint. How big will your sump be?

Another factor is with 2 RD pumps, you increase the chance that one of your pumps will fail. That failure could cost you $$$. Not sure if that is a substantial risk or not. Retail is $1875-$1900, so $1300 seems like a good price.

Oh, and self cleaning heads are for lightweights...

I talked to Josh at Premium Aquatics and he was recommending the BK Super Marin. The air it pulls is insane, but I have to check if my sump can accomodate a skimmer that size. The pump replacement is a concern and I'm waiting for a price replacement.

LOL...I know self cleaning heads are for lightweights...but they sure are cool.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it. How do you like your par meter ?
    Any interesting readings ?

Other than being really expensive, I really like it. I have only been using it for instant readings so far (haven't used the logging features yet), but it is easy to use and seems well built and well sealed (the meter itself is probably splash resistant, but not water proof). The sensor cord is also very long (2 meters) and rigid enough to hold the sensor by the cord to get one's hand out of the way during readings. The sensor itself has a stainless screw on the bottom that could be affixed to a holder of some sort. I am going to modify a long Kent scraper handle to use with the sensor.

As far as readings are concerned, my Sunpower is delivering 230-250 PAR @ 21" below fixture on the sand (even in the front corners) in front and around 130-150 PAR @ 21" below fixture on the sand in the back. My fixture is not centered front-back on my tank, thus the difference. Toward the top of my LR I obtain 380-430 PAR @ 10-12" below fixture. Not scorching, but plenty nuff for SPS up there. I may actually raise the fixture an inch or so, since I think the 230-250 PAR is a bit strong for my acans.

Thanks for the feedback. I really would like to get one before adding any corals to the frag tank...let alone the main display. I like the modifying of the par meter idea by the way.

Fits like a glove. I also drilled a 1/16" air hole on top.
