Use of filter media while cycling

    Hey there,

I'm preparing for the re-birth of my BioCube 14.

I just received the media rack from InTank LLC.

First off, can you put Purigen and Chemi-pure in the same basket, then Cheato (w/ a light , of course) in another basket?

Second, should you run either/or Purigen, Chemi-pure or the cheato while cycling the tank or should you wait until the cycle is complete?

    Thanks

Welcome back! It looks like the rack is meant to be used that way and don't see it would be any different than throwing bags in the sump. I don't use Purigen but I would not use it during the cycle. I think that it would markedly slow or even prevent the cycle. I don't run carbon while cycling although I don't think it would hurt anything if you did. I think Chemipure is a fine product but I find it expensive and I don't believe the claims that it lasts for 6 months and you never need to do water changes. IMO, you are better off using a few Tbs of high quality carbon in a mesh bag and replacing it every week. I'd probably wait until after the cycle to add the cheato.

i usually wait until the tank is cycled before adding macro.

as mentioned, the reason is that live macro will use the NH3 as food, which is counterproductive at this point, as the NH3 serves to feed one of the species of bacteria you're trying to culture. if you add the macro (or the purigen) from the start, it will slow your cycle.
