Thermos Swap

I got my Thermos back from Phurst! I have some of his brown digi with purple tips. When I first put it it in my tank it was a deep blue-ish purple but the next day it was chocolate brown with lavender tips.

He also sent me a frag of his green slimer. It extended its polyps as soon as I put it in the tank and slimed. The next day it was bleached. There may be a faint bit of yellow on one branch of it. What do you think happened?

Hmm, the slimer I sent to Bobby did the same thing. I fear because of the branching, the wet paper towels let it dry out. Seems damp works well for twigs and zoas, maybe not so well for branched pieces.

Well that makes me feel better. I was afraid I did something wrong. I will have to go and re-read the article, I thought that acros were mentioned as doing better with the damp method.

i have had a lot of trouble with shipping Bali Green Slimer frags. if i would have thought about it i would have had you ship that one in water and see how it faired against Carmies frag, but i didnt think about it. the polyps are NICE, not as big as i anticipated, but still nice. i think you will like how i plan on shipping them !!

The Holding, Shipping and Transport of Corals, Part 1: Shipping and Transport by Eric Borneman - Reefkeeping.com specifically mentions acro several times.

Maybe the thermos was too small and the acro's oxygen requirements too high? I assume lots of the microscopic critters in the slimer's "slime" use oxygen too.

I love this Thermos Trade idea! Hopefully some Canadians will be up for it in the next few months... I gave away most of my large livestock in preparation for moving at the end of the month. I still have a 20g and a 10g full of frags but my main 75g tank is quite barren: 2 large sun corals, 1 carpet anemone that I don't trust anyone else to feed properly, and 1 saddle clownfish in the anemone. (Water quality has never been better )

Good point. Based on my very limited experience I would use this method again for digitata and zoas without any qualms. Josh (Small Fry) in Windsor has been collecting corals left and right so he may soon be ready for swapping!
