Question Coral ID Please

I rescued this frag from a LFS but they couldn't give me a good ID on it. They said it was some kind of Montipora. It is a encrusting coral.

Anyone know what it is?
Thanks.

Ditto...

Could be encrusting Monti (minus any polyp extension and a real good macro shot). Could be a chalice... could be many things.

hmm.. I've never seen those corallites on a Montipora sp. before. I'm leaning towards a Montastrea sp... Maybe a cavernosa?

Google "pineapple coral" and you will see some similar corals. ID is somewhat difficult since I can't see the size of the corallites in relation to the overall piece. Please post a larger pic.

You're welcome. Now if you can just hit that "Thanks" button to give me "thanks"... (I don't know what that means but I've never been "thanked" in this forum before..)

Also, a Montastrea would be an "LPS".

You have 2 choices to say thanks to others. The first one is to click on the thanks button. It does exactly what it says and can be used for just about anything. If you had something bad happen and someone says "I'm sorry" you can thank them by clicking the Thanks button. Or, if you post a shot of your tank and someone says "Beautiful tank" you could just click on the Thanks button.

If someone gives you great advice you can also click the Thanks button. But, you may also want to use the second way to say thanks, by clicking on the Yin Yang button under their name. This adds to their reputation and will eventually give them more little green squares under their name. This reputation rating can help people decide if others value your advice and if it is likely born of experience. You wouldn't use it for someone saying I'm sorry. That is nice but does not help someone decide if their advice is good.

If you go to the bottom of this page Talkingreef - Forums you will see the listing for top reputation.

Don't be afraid to use either button. We have the best community on the web with some really knowledgeable people! We want to make sure everyone knows who's nice and who gives good advice!
