Soft Coral chemical warfare

I've heard people use the term "chemical warfare" in regards to soft coral interaction with LPS and SPS. Is that a reference to proximity chem warfare or is this happening in the water column?

I'm not experiencing any problems myself, but I do have a somewhat crowded tank (my candycane's won't stop growing) with 3 softies and I wanted to know how they are affecting things.

well its hard for me to say exactly which species are worst for this, but the most familiar are Acropora sp. and Sarcophyton sp.
leathers and Acros dont play well together. sometimes there is no problem, but often they cause problems. this is usually apparent when there are lots of one, and few o the other
