Can You?

Can you protect your hands from getting stung from corals? I dont really feel in the mood to get stung if I ever get corals. Are there anyway like gloves or something?

I have never used them. Nor have I been stung that I know of. But better safe then sorry.

I encase my hand in silicone sealant and allow it to cure overnight before I do my maintainance. If it is an emergency, I use laminating layers of Saran Wrap and strips of Reynolds aluminum foil to make a gaunlet for my hand.

First, you must send me the camera so that I can encase it in silicone.

If you can send me a second camera, I will encase it in saran wrap and foil strips.

Sure you can buy those gloves linked to above. Unless you are allergic, they aren't necessary. The only exception I can think of is if you have an open wound you might want to protect it from invasion of bacteria or possibly Zoanthid slim. I've heard, never experienced, that some of the Zoas have caused infection in open wounds.

There is one organism to be aware of that can be present in aquariums. It's a bacteria that I was introduced to back in the '80s. It's Micro-bacteria marinum. It's somewhat rare in occurrence but every aquarist should be aware of it. It enters through open sores/wounds and takes a week or two to develop and show it's presence as open sores that oozes pus. The challenge in identifying it lyes in the fact that the doctor or Lab has to culture it at body temperature. They usually culture at room temp and this bacteria will not show up at that temp. I know because it happened to me. Once identified, it is a bugger to get rid of. Be aware of this one.

I've been in countless aquariums, mine and many others, this is the only problem I've run into. But, if you are concerned, get the gloves.

I've been lucky so far and have never been stung by anything; however, if you want to be extra careful, you can use the gloves that you can buy from the drugstore/pharmacy (I just take a box home from the lab) or even rubber cleaning gloves...just make sure you've never used them for actual cleaning!

im not in the habbit of being stung myself, & if i have been i didn't feel it, kept a few spring loaders in my time so my chances at vegas seem pretty good.

As for the skittles disease, its not a nice one, glad ive never seem the likes of it even remotely close by!

You are correct Gwen. Here's an article about it from Web MD - http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic281.htm - I think everyone should read up on this one.

FWIW, I've got my hands in my tank constantly and never had a problem until I was glueing a frag onto a rock one day and my feet swelled up to 2 times their normal size and got a headache for 3 days straight ... so I've started wearing gloves when working on the 2 big rocks in our tank that have zoas and large protopalythoa grandis polyps!
