Cucumber Inquiry - Anyone Got Them?

Hello everyone, I'm interested in keeping a Sea Cucumber in my Reef Aquarium and I'm curious to know if anyone has one or some and what their experiences or recommendations are for them. I understand that their are some which are Filter Feeders and other that are Detrius Substrate Feeders. Which are the easier and more advanced specimens to hold within the aquarium? Thanks for the info.

i've had many different cucumbers, both filtering and substrate eaters. i think your sand needs a little maturing before getting the substrate burrowers. the filtering type you just need to feed well, otherwise they will shrink. i would stay away from the big types like sea-apples because if something goes wrong, you have the potential of wiping out your entire tank.

I saw a Phillipine Sea Apple today. It was beautiful but I would prefer if I attempted to get one that it would be the Australian Sea Apple. It has a prettier color scheme. :-)

yes, the australian apples are beautiful, but keep in mind you are going to play a high risk game. it does not take much to keep an apple, have you considered a specimen tank?

I already have 6 specimen tanks going I would rather sea something as interesting like that go into the Show Tank. I understand that risk that is incorporated with keeping them but I think I'm more of a Sea Cucumber kind of guy. Especially the Pink Sea Cucumber.

make sure you keep an eye on fish that might irritate it.

sea apples can be toxic to fish and wipe out the entire tank if they die or eviscerate. Keep that in mind...

I have a Stichopus chloronotus (Black Cucumber) that I've had for two years now. I have coral sand, but I think they are happier with a fine sand bed. I think he's been pretty easy. He eviscerated right after I bought him (which is pretty typical), but hasn't since.

I think I'm going to go for a Pink Cucumber, I like the coloration of their body better then the Black Cucumbers and that fact that their Filter Feeders as oppossed to relying on the sand bed for nutrients. I think I'm actually going to hold off for a month before making any new additions to the Reef. :-)
