Urchin Concern

Hey all,

I've been waiting for a good photo-op of my Mespilia globulus ("Blue Tuxedo Urchin"). Not a "looker" by any means but I find him terribly fascinating. How could a creature with a mouth mechanish called an "Aristotle's lantern" not be fascinating? He's always wearing a big crop of algae and other stuff on his back (which is considered a sign of happiness), so he is almost always obscured from most angles. Months after introducing him to the tank, the moment finally came. The pictures did not come out very well, and my glass was filthy, but I can clearly see that the urchin is missing some of the blue coloration in one of his bands!

I'm off to do some research on this, but I suspect it is not a favorable sign. If anyone has any background experience on this, please let me know.

RandyJ is an unknown quantity at this point
I once wanted to see if my tuxedo's blue "velvet" felt as soft as it looked and gently brushed it with my finger. The result was the same as your photo. My guess is, your urchin rubbed up against something and scuffed off part of it's "coat". The good news is, my urchin fully recovered to it's original splendor, so I'm sure yours will too!

Mine seems to bounce between blue and black, but I have not seen that sort of mottled look before. He does appear otherwise healthy. If he's active, and not shedding spines, I think I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I love my tuxedo too!
