Crab ID

Good morning all. Does anyone recognize this crab. He was a stowaway on some live rock. Caught him nibbling on part of a brittle star appendage (also a stowaway) so I figure he's a bad guy. Thanks!

Eeek.. dunno, but he looks mean. Crabs are always hard to ID.

If he was nipping at a star, I'd keep him out of the display. At least until you can positively ID it.

Got to agree with David = MEAN.

Some crabs hunt at night for sleeping fish and other things. He looks like one of those.

Thank you both. I agree. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck. Can't find anything online to make a positive ID. More curiosity than anything.

I'm new to this, are the reef friendly crabs active during the day or still more so at night like these hunters?

Emerald (mythrax) crabs have a 50/50 reputation. Porcelain crabs are wonderful, but tend to be a bit cryptic. I've no experience in boxer crabs, sponge crabs, arrow crabs etc. So I have nothing to offer there.
