Can someone ID this please.

I'm slowly setting up my FO finally. I bought some live rock from my LFS, about a week ago and I found a hand full of these little things starting to pop out of some of the rock. Can someone tell what they are? And is it good or bad? They look pretty cool, but I don't know what they are. Thanks.

Looks like an Aiptasia (glass anemone) to me. Its hard to tell in the pictures though. If it IS then they are a nuisance and you should kill them.

I agree....if it looks like either of these...I'd get rid of it....carefully.

I think I've read that too, but never tried it.

I actually used some Joe's Juice, had to dose it (the one in the rock) a second time about two weeks later as it started to grow back. Haven't seen it since.

What you do not want to do is try and cut it out or pull it out....as any piece of it can create a new one.

After I dosed mine, I waited a little and used a turkey baster and sucked everything up.

I had some last year, so I got two peppermint shrimp. They took care of them in about two weeeks. Haven't seen anymore since then.

I'm not exactly sure what it was that got my aiptasia - around the time that they started popping up, I got some peppermint shrimp, a mandarin and a six-line wrasse. The aiptasia disappeared and I've never seen them since - but I have no idea which of the critters actually took care of them!

I had a bad outbreak of aptasia a few years back. I bought 10 pepermint online and they went to work. Glad I did it the natural way. Be happy that they aren't mangano, which pepermint will not eat

you can also make a paste out of kalk and water and shoot it at them-just be careful if you have other corals close by

peppermints work great too...

Peps don't take Mojano.. correct. In that case, using the various syringe and "potion" methods is the best option. Kalk, Joe's Juice, there are many options. Some have even used super heated water.

Actually, I've done that...or at least superglued myself to many rocks trying to do that...

But truly, when I did use superglue, it seems as if the buggers "popped" out of a hole or crevace right next to where it used to be. It may be that I had porous rock, or just a wild imagination, but when I truly kalked them, they melted.

Plus... there is SOME satisfaction watching them writhe a lil'
