thanks guys,
lets hear any other suggestions

lets also keep the commentary to a minimum, i want to discuss the CD here, not the detail of LFS practices of selling equipment, please feel free to star a new thread for that

IMO, It might take some time but if you could edit, i don't know maybe 5-10 diferent episodes and fade from one question or subject to another without airing the answer Shake it up a little. start with an advance questions, then a simple questions, then a medium question. or something like that. That way the listener will hear a verity of what talking reef is all about. If they are an expert or a newbie they will understand whats going on.. But like i said it might take some time to edit the shows into one 30 minute show though..

Wes...dude...that is exactly what we need... a "teaser". Edit in some good questions...the beginnings of the answer...maybe even the answer to some "basic stuff" and then lead them to the product for more...

Hmmm...I knew we'd not go wrong sticking you in a position of power

well, im not sure i want to go through that much work just yet..
i was thinking about cutting some stuff together..

the idea is to record intro, explaining what we are, what were about, and out main mission. the go into a brief description of the first episode, then play it, then an intro to the second episode and play that, etc.

each episode will be edited so the time sensitive commentary before and after the show topic is removed, each topic/episode will have an intro, and the CD will end with how you subscribe to the show to get the rest of them..

the best thing i can cup up with is to post that CD as an ISO image and people can download that image to burn and distribute as they desire.

i guess the next question is do i create and the CD in CD Audio (to play in any CD player), or MP3?

i think for the teaser part. the intro commentary can mention a lot of the other shows.
example "you just listen to basics of light, got more info we have shows on MH, Reflectors, etc."

i want to accomplish two things here.
im not actually "selling" a product for money, i am selling it in the sense i want them to come and get more. so i want to give them a full understanding of the quality of content they can expect, also i want to give them a resource that is very helpful even if they dont come to the site for more. my overall goal is and always has to simple make people more educated, nothing more..
besides,it might be hard for them to find the one show, and the right time in that one show where they can get that one question answered, it might prove to be more frustrating than helpful.

think if you wanted to re-listen to one question and its answer.. how long would it take you to find the right part of the right show... and you even familiar with it..

You can do both on the same CD. I have game CD's that have data (obviously) and will play the game soundtracks in regular CD players. Quake, for one, has a nice Trent Reznor soundtrack and Redneck Rampage had the same thing.

yes, good point.. thanks
i can do the edited part in CD audio, and even include the entire original shows in MP3 since MP3 files are MUCH smaller than CDA files..

Being new to all of this one episode that i found very informative was on the importance of DSBs. As a complete novice, it gave me some insight on the process of natural filtration. Thanks.

Fat walrus (you have me at a disadvantage, I don't know your first name?),

I agree with almost everything you said, the only thing I disagree with is the LFS HAVING to carry them and that Everyone does carry them. Everyone does not carry them and they can make a choice not too and I've seen many good ones that do no carry Seaclones or Rio pumps and I look at that as a first indication of a good store (talking to the staff and noting husbandry is next). Canister filters and wet/dry filters do have their places, but typically not for a reef tank.

LFS are not always to blame, hobbyists not taking the time to research definitely have to share some of the blame (sometimes the majority of the blame), as well as the online stores and websites that promote items that are lousy as great products. In Eric Borneman's skeptical aquarist podcast he mentions the best hobbyists that are successful in the long run are the ones that take the time to research. This is why I think that is a critical podcast to include. It is also a tremendous amount of information for a new hobbyist to take in and it is difficult to distinguish when starting out what are reliable sites and unreliable sites (both online and offline).

I think every hobbyist is bound to go through this process no matter how much they research, especially with many sources appearing reputable when they are not. As for your example where the guy still blames the LFS for the bad purchases, well, it takes a big person to admit it was their lack of research could have been part of the cause. Not much you can do in that situation.

I think this is where Rob's CD is so critical, if it can be distributed and contain a selection of podcasts that at least partially address this issue, then he will be doing a great service to the hobby. Some hobbyists don't want to hear you need to research and avoid some cheap products (some cheap products are great!), so they don't listen, but I think the more experienced hobbyists (aka Rob and his guests) need to say it and try to get the message out there to counteract the other messages that do not have the hobbyists best interests in mind.

Brian

ok, folks, as much as i love the debate...
at this point i ask that you refrain from discussion not related to the Demo CD

please post off topic comments into a new thread

i have to go back through this thread to gather info and it makes it hard to sort through things.

Brian, and Blub
please dont take it personal, as its not.
i do think the big picture is important, and your comments are valid, i just want to keep this thread a bit more focused thats all.. thanks..

I'd probably want to select different types of episodes for a CD destined to be given away near the cash register at a big, newbie-frequented, retail pet store chain versus a CD that was going to be offered at a small local "reef-only" specialty shop catering to advanced aquarists -- and different selections again for discs to give out at the local aquarium club or regional frag swap.

It would be cool if we also have the option to download 'generic' TR cover art and insert graphics from the website; for those people who want to (and are very willing to) burn batches of discs to give away that have their own personal episode selections.
