How are your water parameters? Tell us a little about your setup.

Oh dear, I'm affraid this isn't going to go well. Hippo tangs grow to more than a foot in length, and even when tiny, need lots and lots of swimming room to remain healthy. A 120 gallon tank would be the absolute bare minimum, and even then, the fish isn't going to be completely at home. Your tang is stressed and possibly sick. It needs to go back to the LFS or into a friends large tank ASAP or it's not going to make it.

By water parameters I mean what are the readings for things you need to be testing for. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature and salinity.

How long has your tank been set up, and what else is in the tank?

    Can you define good?

If the tank has been up that long and your water quality is stable, and the clown doesn't seem to be afected, I'm going to chalk it up to the stress of living in that tank.

Assuming temp and salinity are good, I think it's just unhappy.

I'm affraid not. Particularly for a hippo I'd be very hesitant to reccomend anything less than a 6' long tank. Hippos are particularly susceptible to diseases like ich due primarily to the fact that they stress out so easily. These fish live on reefs, but swim miles a day from reef to reef grazing on algae. They need lots and lots of room to do well.

Unfortunately, and somewhat counterintuitively, the LFS is frequently the absolute worst place you can get advice. At best, a lot of LFS employees are just undertrained, behind the times or ignorant. At worst, they're looking to make a buck. Places like Talkingreef are great places to get "the straight dope", since we have no ulterior motives, and are generally well informed.

Seahorses need relatively litte room, but have their own special requirements that aren't generaly compatible with a reef tank. I don't know if keeping corals is your intention, but if you are, I'd pass on the ponies.

The smallest tank I'd really feel comfortible keeping a tang in long term would be a 90 for the smaller tangs like scopas, kole or convict.

    Hi Jeff and to TR!

Seahorses should be kept in species tanks. You will need to do your research since they have special needs. For instance, many species are temperate and you would need a chiller. I have not kept ponies myself but I believe that there are some that can be kept in a smaller tank like your cube.

This is how I moved my nano. Take your fish out and bag them up. Put your LR in Totes and keep it covered with water. Leave the sand covered by a 1/2 inch or so of water in the bottom of tank. Save as much water as possible. Take your fish tank to the new house and set it back up quickly. Have some new SW available to finish filling the tank.

Monitor parameters daily since it is possible that you could have enough die off from the LR being exposed to the air. You should have plenty of SW available. That way if you have a mini cycle from moving the LR you will be able to do water changes and keep the ammonia and nitrite in check.
