OK, I think you were asking one question and Raymond was answering another. Clean milk jugs would probably be OK to store water in although I would probably just buy gallon jugs of water and not have to worry about contamination. But I think you were asking would tap water that has been treated and left to sit for some time be OK to use as top off. My answer is that I can never recommend using tap water in a saltwater aquarium. You are just asking for problems. You can store RO/DI water for an indefinite period of time.

This is not really an option, sadly. Using tap water will cause you giant head aches. It is well worth the 30-40c a gallon the LFS charges for RODI. If you cant afford that many super walmarts have a culligan water RO system at 25c a gallon(not as good as a rodi but better than tap). You need to use the purest water possible for mixing salt and top offs. If you use de-chlorinated tap water all the phosphates, nitrates, silicates, and trace pharmaceuticals will build up over time. This will cause great hair algae growth, could kill fish, and will certainly kill corals.
ok so heres a little update. since last post i decided that i havent done enough research so i stoped and continued my research. id like to get it started before summer but we will see. sorry for the wait not that my tanks gunna be anything special..

I hate to say this but getting a coral before the live rock is not a good thing. I think it would been better off at the LFS than having to go through a cycle. As soon as you add your live rock the cycle begins , it will raise your ammonia and as it does that ,your coral is going to die. There is going to be a very small chance that he is going to even make it past the first stage and a very very small chance he will make it past the nitrite stage. I would suggest giving him back to the LFS to hold for you or put him in a quarantine tank.

No it's normal in any saltwater tank, Some tank's even get it after a year, It comes and goes.. All you can really do is sit there and think...Man my tank looks like poop, You dont really wanna fight it cause you would distrupting other stuff and it cant support its own that long, If you really wanna get rid of it if it gets worse or you ever get it again. Do a 48 hour lights out period, It's just enought to irritate the Diatom(algae) and make them disloge and kill their self and your coral's should be fine. Again it is absoulty 100% normal and actaully a good thing.

When it happened to me, I was using airline tubing to try to suck it out but it came back the next day. After about 1 1/2 weeks of that I almost threw in the towel. Came home from work one day and it had completely vanished.

I just read through this thread and I am eager to follow your progress. My Nano cube arrives Wednesday then I start the slow process of building a reef. Great job on yours so far and keep up the good work!
