I took Anthony's and Frankie's advice about discarding the old batch of saltwater. This time I utilized a panworld 200ps pump for circulation, no heater, & added the salt over a couple of days.
I also picked up a Davey Jones Skimmate Locker from my buddy Mike.

I also started placing the sand in the tank.
This is far as I'm getting today...300 gallons sure goes fast. Although, I was able to fire up the 4 Tunze 6205's, 1 Tunze 6100, & Tunze wavemaker. I'm really happy the way the flow is thus far. The only part where I have some sand movement is at the right front where the 6100 is at...I'll add some larger grain sand in that area to take care of it.
I made 150 gallons of saltwater last night and filled up the tank up to the top of the overflows. I moved one of the rocks from the bommie to the right side and placed the Tunze rock on top of it. It stopped the sand from moving and being kicked up. I also added Dr. Tim's One and Ony Bacteria and will be adding reagent grade ammonium chloride daily. I'm shooting to get a 2 ppm reading.
Re: Gimmito's 450 L-shaped display
Update:
Temp-78
PH-8.3
Ammonia-1.0 ppm
Nitrite-0.5 ppm
Added 100 drops more (400 total) of ammonium chloride. Shooting for 2.0 ppm.

Thanks Rayme...long time no hear ! I was wondering where everybody was.
Yea, I have been noticing there is not many people on, even on my local clubs forum. I'm afraid the economy is forcing a lot of us reef addicts to stop for a while.

I've been following along Jim. Quite the setup. Your knowledge base far exceede's mine so I'm a silent follower. Ray, there was a local club in my area that fell apart due to lack of participation. A year ago people were asking "where's Rob", now noone is here and Rob is the top poster (and I enjoy the articles by the way). I hope this is just a temporary slump.
I've been following and agree with all of you, our forums in windsor have gotten to like 1-3 posts per week, which sucks.
But the economy hasnt hit me to hard and i am in the process of getting back into the Habit/Addiction.
I've also been silently following along due to the fact that i have a tiny 120gallon system lmao

what exactly is the purpose of a skimmate locker? Just a skimmer overflow?
I could google it but this gets the forums a little more activity doesn't it? lol

Yes...activity !
You are correct, it is a skimmer overflow. It has a carbon so you don't get that stank and auto shutoff so you won't have a overflow.

I would say there swabbie (squeegee wiper for skimmer neck) & skimmate locker are their most popular products.

Cycle update:
Specific Gravity-1.026
Temp-78
PH-8.4
Ammonia-0.5 (added 150 drops ammonium chloride)
Nitrite-1.0 ppm
Nitrate-250 ppm
Note: Nitrite & Nitrate are really starting to take off.
good to see your levels are moving along (y)

Cycle update:
SG (1.026)
Temp (78)
PH (8.4)
Ammonia (0.25 ppm)-added 250 drops of ammonium chloride
Nitrite (1 ppm)
Nitrate (100 ppm)
Note: I found my Salifert test kits, they are so much easier to use than the old Red Sea test kits. I'm still looking into the Hanna checkers, or I might just bite the bullet and get a Hach or LaMotte colorimeter.
Hey Gimmito,
I read up on your system in 2009-2010, awesome to see you moving along! I can't wait to watch progress on your system!
Saw something about throwing out your saltwater, I'll have to go back and read up on that.
What was the purpose of adding the ammonium chloride? I've read about tossing in a raw shrimp to encourage cycling, is that what the AmCl is for?
I haven't been around for the past long while, but it's true, things are pretty slow. Soon I'll have more time to dedicate to the community (and my salty addiction)
I ought to be reading from casebooks, but reefs are so much more interesting!
It is exciting to see the tank with water in it!
Yes, the ammonium chloride is a cycle starter.

Hi Stef !
Wow... a blast from the past ! Yes, I finally have water in the beast. I initially had to toss the water I made due to adding too much salt too fast and getting serious precipitation. Also, I used Dr. Tim's One and Only bacteria to cycle the tank along with the ammonium chloride they provided. It's a more controlled way to cycle a tank than the raw shrimp method and more humane than tossing in a couple of damsels. It's also won't cloud your water via a bacterial bloom or smell up the house.
How's your biosphere tank doing ?
I finally received my Water Blaster HY-16000 return pump. Here's a little size comparison to it's lil brother the HY-3000 (which will run the media reactors).
