    Scott,

Thanks for the comics info...the money I could save from having to rent a storage space each month would pay for a good skimmer in no time !
Also, thanks for all the sites. I want to keep my options open regarding skimmers. I don't have the cash either to keep upgrading skimmers...just one and that's it. The red dragon pumps start at 400 bucks just to replace the bk 180 ..yikes ! I've had a euro reef rs 80 on a 55 and a deltec mce600 on a 75. The deltec out skimmed the euro reef hands down.

    How your tank doing ?

Hehe. I had a couple of coworkers with so many action figures and other collectibles that they each had to rent storage space as well...

The best skimmer I've used on my 55 so far has been an RS80. Are you trying to incite me to upgrade?

My tank is OK. My fuge project is in part to combat some micro algae growing in my DT. I've been testing PAR of CFL bulbs (for Chaeto growing) with my new Apogee meter that I got for my birthday. John Maloney (reefcleaners.org) suggested that I aim for a PAR of 200, which he claims is the PAR Chaeto grows best. 200 PAR is not hard to achieve with the bulb 4" above the water, but my bulb has to be around 8" and the PAR really dives, even with a 42w CFL bulb I only see 140 at the surface. I have to get a better reflector, or figure out how to lower the bulb without risking splash or submersion. 26w Flood CFLs (with built-in reflector) do better per watt than the plain curly bulbs, but the floods are only available up to 26w. Hmm....

    Scott,

I got the deltec for 300 bucks used, so it was a easy upgrade. Those Germans know their skimmers ! I think you're inticing me w/that apogee par meter ! Maybe I can thow some hints to the wife before my b-day rolls around in october.

I've found if you keep the chaeto tumbling (via return or powerhead) it helps with the growth. I've always used the home depot cheapie reflectors with the lights of america cfl bulbs.

I've had Chaeto, Ulva, and Halimeda in the past in this tank. The Chaeto is all I have left now. May add some Gracillaria once i get the lighting correct. I bought a few more exotic macros from John Maloney in the past, thinking that I would start a display fuge but somehow I couldn't get it together before they withered or got eaten by my Emerald while in the QT. LOL.

Now the fuge is BB with some big LR rubble. Thinking about adding a 9"x12"x4" removable tray of sand, but not sure. It would help to keep the macros closer to the surface without having to float it in a basket.

Need to find a source of some black egg crate...

I have a more heavy duty clip on with a ground wire (paid extra for that) that I was hoping to use, but the reflector is dull extruded aluminum (not polished) which seems to be really limiting. I noticed the HD reflectors are a lot more shiny, but seem to be made out of tin foil. Oh well, I may have to forgo the grounded plug...

Since we are remodeling I had the contactor pour a thick pad under the stand and tie it in w/4 x 4's. I also had him install a 3" drain right next to the sump...no more buckets !

I was also kicking around the idea of installing a deltec eco cooler underneath the house...what do you guys think ?

Kold Sterile Filter. Keeps essential elements. Filters last 50,000 gallons. 50 bucks to replace them. No wasted water. Great filtered water for the family.

Wow. I am so jealous! Just make sure to filter out any algae with a sock or micron bag to keep it from getting to the ocean...

The sump I bought came with two 500 micron socks. I'll probably end up with 8 of them to rotate in & out.

    Just trying to think ahead.
I'm also planning on a automated water change & using a tunze osmolator for top off.

Left side hood. I have 28" from the top of the ceiling to where the water line will be. There will be bookcases on either side of the tank. I still will have 15 1/2" of view from both sides.

Right side of hood. I'm thinking of an adjustable mount for the metal halide reflectors...Any suggestions ?
I also will line the interior of the hood with laminate for easy wipe down ability.
