    Another star...

    Howdy folks!

Found another mystery addition to my tank today. Is this star ( the big one, center) a goodie or a baddie?

    Thanks, Tom

It's an asternia starfish. They're grazers, so generally good, however, they can easily reproduce to plague proportions, and there have been a few not well documented cases of them possibly eating soft coral. I don't personally believe that, but the stories are out there.

I agree with Pearson. It looks like you have some nice hitchhikers on your rock congrats.

I have asterinas and have never had a problem with them. I have seen them in among my zoas but believe they are just cleaning the rock as the polyps open right back up when the stars move on.

Nice, clear pic. You sure have had a pluffery of hitchikers. Lot's of candy to spend many hours staring into aqua space.

actually, that is NOT an Asterina sp., but a species of micro-brittle star. they usually only get about as large as a quarter, will breed in your tank, and are great detritivores. you'll often see them waving just their arms out of the LR.

ah...duh! the star on the right does appear to be an Asterina sp. that particular species tends to get a bit larger than the more common variety, and from experience, i can tell you that they LOVE coralline, and will denude your LR in spots.
