Best filter for 40 Gallon Breeder

Right now I have a Whisper 20-40 filter, undergravel filter, and a coralife super skimmer 65. i am wondering if my filtration system could be part of the problem to my brown and green algea overgrowth. Any suggestions on a filtration upgrade?

I would say that your undergravel filter is probably your problem. Undergravel filters arent the best thing for a reef or FO tank they tend to make high nitrates and other bad problems. A skimmer in a sump is to me the best way of filtration also with some cheto to.

I think the UGF and power filter are the main reason for your algae bloom. I suggest LS and LR as the basis of your filtration. When coupled your skimmer and you should be good to go.

Dustin, I would switch out the crushed coral for aragonite sand. The CC traps detritus and the sand won't. You can buy dry sand and your LR will quickly seed it. You can use the HOB filter for flow or to run carbon in but I would not use the bio-wheel or whatever your has.

The LR should sustain your bio filter. You could change the CC for sand half at a time.
