    ASM Protein Skimmer

Hi all! My name is Trenton, I am new to the community and really new to the hobby. Haven't even started my own tank yet. I want to have a 55 gallon reef tank, with a 20 gallon sump (maybe refugium.) I want to know if there is any one who knows about asm protein skimmers, and will it work with the amount of water I want. Let me know, Thank you.

it all depends on what size skimmer you buy...the bigger you get the better...pretty much

Hey Trenton, welcome to Talking Reef, the best and friendliest reef forum on the Net.

I'm not familiar with the ASM brand of skimmers. Any particular reason you chose that brand to ask about?

    Hi Trenton to TR.

There is no elevator to success in marine tanks. You have to take the stairs.

Well I heard they were pretty good, but I wanted to here what people who actually use them say. Does anyone know of a good skimmer for a lower price?

    Hi Trenton and to TR.

My LFS sells ASM's and the skimmers have a good reputation around here. Dick (Amphibious) is the propriator of The Cultured Reef and is TR sponsor. He handles Top Fathom skimmers. I haven't used them myself but I trust Dick.

I have used an ASM G2 for years. It was good, but with a couple modifications (direct fed & recirculated) it was even better. I have to admit though that since I got my H & S skimmer the G2 has been unused. The H & S is an absolute beast in pulling skimmate compared, but its also 2X the price (unless you buy it used like I did).

Hello there welcome to TR I am running a ASM G3 on my 150gal reef tank I have been running this for about 7 months now I like the skimmer the only thing is I am looking at maybe doing one of the mods on this to get more skimate out of it I am getting about a half inch of skimate a day. I am only running my skimmer from 6 at night till 8 in the morning. I have not really had anyother experiance with other models as for the asm came with my ecosystem pro refugium. well good luck happy reefing!

    Muskyman,
a 1/2 inch a day is a lot. Is it fairly light in color? You may want to lower the water level to get less water, more gunk. Good skimmate should be like good beer...almost impossible to see through.
