    Epoxy Putty & Super Glue

    Quick question!!

I am rearranging rock work this morning and have read several places that epoxy putty is good for adhering rocks together.

    Is this true?

Will it put off chemicals in the water before curing?

    Will it hurt my animals?

Also, I have seen where some use super glue for attaching frags.

Is super glue okay to use also?

I can feel my brain cells burning off while using it - does it bother the animals?

    Thanks so much
    Rhonda

Cyanoacrilate based super glue is just fine. to use. Epoxy is fine as well, but not all of them. If there's a Home Depot near you, you can use this stuff:
AquaMendŽ - Epoxies and Adhesives - Polymerics Systems, Inc.

Otherwise, stick to the epoxys available from the LFS.

The epoxy putty they had is Doit Best Epoxy Putty.

I haven't used it yet - I will Google it. I don't always trust what I find on the net is why I was asking the experts - you guys!!

Besides the epoxies from Deltec, Two Little Fishies and whoever else from the LFS, the Aquamend is the only one from a hardware store I KNOW is safe. I'd be very nervous about anything else....

Potable water is just water that's safe for drinking. I think better safe than sorry here

Hey, thanks Renee! Great info. Although I have used sticks and sticks of Aquamend right after mixing it with no ill effects.

I have too.... but this is all the companies would agree to. I emailed the companies and Waterweld was the only one that said it was safe immediately.

    Thanks so much Renee.

I am leaving now to search, I will look for the Waterweld. That seems the safest.

Could not find JB Waterweld. I finally found the AquaMend at another Home Depot. I will give it a try.

Are you gluing frags or are you gluing your live rock together?

I am doing both. It is a bigger project that will take more time so I am working on it as I get the chance.

    Hey All,

This statement, "Do NOT add to aquarium with inhabitants until 24 hours after the putty was mixed." is a way they cover their butt to ward off claims of death of critters after use.

I use a brand of 2 part epoxy from Lowes with no adverse effects. Don't know the brand because I throw away the packaging when I open it.

Just like the sand that say "Not For Aquarium Use" I've seen Mr Stickey's glue at the hardware store and in Dr F&S's catalogue.

I have used Harvey's brand Plumbers epoxy putty with no ill effects. I have also had a few local reefers that also use it with no problems. I found it at Menard's in a blue and white packaging and costs around $5.00 for a decent 4 oz. tube.

Here's a trick that made me very happy: don't just use one or the other. I mix the epoxy putty into a little ball, put superglue gel (thicker is better) on one side of the ball, then put my frag, rock, whatever in there. I then put glue on the other side of the ball and squish the whole thing onto my location. I find that epoxy is never quite adhesive enough, but superglue doesn't give you enough area touching for a good bond. This method solves both problems. I've never had any issues since starting this.

I also use hot glue for big jobs, the kind used on high temperature guns, you can find the sticks at hobby lobby and Walmart, it is best used drying the live rock or frags, just make sure you cool down the frags fast on a bowl with the aquarium salt water right after glue is set. after a while the glue is covered by micro algae or coraline, is safe to put back in the aquarium right after is cooled.
i have been fraggimg and arraging rock like this for a long time.

The only thing I would mention with using aquamend is that it does get hot while curing and has been known to cause issues with the area of the coral where you use it if you attach it directly to or too close to a coral.

That was quite the run-on sentence

So, I dont understand. You guys are superglueing frags to live rock? Do you take them out of the tank and do this or do you do this under water? If underwater, do you do it in a bowl and leave it there until it sets before you put it bak in the tank? If you dont do it underwater, do you have to dry off the surfaces first? Will that hurt the coral? I'm so cofused, its like cementing trees into your front yard!!!

    Thanks guys

Yes, we use super glue gel, the thickened kind, on small frags and glue to small pieces of LR or frag plugs. On heavier frags we use the two part epoxy putty found at Lowes. It comes in a round elongated roll. Dark on the outside and light on the inside. Cut off what you are going to use and mix between your fingers until all is one color. I take a deep enough dish with enough tank water to cover the frag when vertical. Usually there is some cutting to do. Using a Dremel tool to square off the end, I then dry the spot on the rock (paper towel) and spread some glue allowing it to set up a bit, 20 seconds or so. Take the frag out of the bowl, dry the end and set it on the glue. You’ll have to hold the frag steady for about another 20 seconds until the glue stiffens. Then set the frag back into the bowl of tank water. There are tools for this process. I use a stout pair of tweezers to hold the frag in place while the glue sets up. With a little practice, you’ll become an expert.
