Look on the container and make sure it doesn't contain the word "Bioseal".
I have an old 55gal tank that I resealed with GE I 100% sillicone. It has been up for about 3 weeks, and now I have yellow/gold algae growing on it. At first I wasn't worried about it, but I cut off a small piece that was hanging from my overflow box. The algae has stained the sillicone all the way through. It is growing on the all the seals. Will this staining degrade the sillicone?
BTW it only grows on the silicone.
Thanks

Hello Coletrickle and to TR.
Silicone is pretty tough so my guess is that it will not be degraded.

Hi Coletrickle, welcome to TR.
There are so many silicone product variations for different applications that you can't just buy a tube of GE silicone and use it. You must read the label before buying. Some have a fungicide in the formula specifically for bathroom use to cut down on mold and fungus. Some will say, "Not for aquarium use" on the label.
I don't have a clue why yours is growing yellow/gold algae but I'd keep a close look at your critter's behavior and be ready to point the finger at the silicone if things go South on you.
It could just be a quirk, too. There certainly are a bunch of those in the world.

Thank you everyone, I will keep an eye on things.
I didn't just randomly select a silicone and hope for the best. I asked around and was told that GE silicon1 was usable in aquariums without ill effect, and was MUCH cheaper than aquarium specific silicon.
Thanks for the welcome.
