For a FOWLER, there's no reason not to replace the canister, as long as it was working well for you. If you plan to go full reef sometime in the future, then definitely consider the sump.
I have a 40gal fowlr tank. The canster filter that I have is starting to leak(it is 4yrs old). What do you guys or gals recommend for a tank of this small size. Do I go out and buy a cansiter again or go for a small smup? Concern with the sump is the overflow box and having water all over the floor. At least the cansiter I never had that problem.

What about a HOB skimmer like a Remora or the like?
I plan to go full reef one of these days, but do not know when. I am looking at CPR AquaFuge 2 Hang-on Refugium with Protein Skimmer, Small. What do you guys think of it.
Certainly won't hurt. They're certainly not the best skimmers in the world, but are better than nothing.

I have had a seaclone for 4years. I guess it works. I bought a Coralife Super Skimmer about a year ago, but could never get it to work right. The best result was a little thick green scum on the inside tub of the cup, but I think it has to do with water level of the take.
From what I have heard, you get that with a lot of the skimmers that are at most of our pricepoints. I have heard the Remora is top notch as a HOB and a lot of people swear by them. If you look out on a local club forum, Craigslist or eBay, you can usually get a pretty good deal and most of the time a used awesome skimmer is going to be better than a new crappy skimmer
Yeah I will look into the skimmer, problem is always saving up for the money to get a good skimmer, who wouldn't a euro-reef.
i love my aqua c remora i would definately recomend one
