He is not at all soft or mushy, still very rigid. I have recently had a nitrate spike as I removed my few remaining balls to make better use of my sump/fuge. I don't know what else may be causing this. Aside from continuing water changes, any ideas/suggestions? What else may be causing this? Salinity has remained pretty stable, Ive had thhe star about six months.

Stars + Nitrate = trouble.
My serpent stars also show stress and some injury when Nitrates are high. I'd say it was just that... and keeping them in check should cause a rebound.

the timing was paralell, those remaining bio balls that were really just there to hold up some filter sponges really DID still have functionality. I'll just keep changing water until the levels come down some more and hope for thee best! So it probably IS the nitrate spike hugh? At its worst, sun coral didnt come out for a day or two, I'm almost sorry I took them out (there were only about 25% remaining), but I wanted the space and didnt really think they were still doing much. I did manage to find another way to keep my sponges afloat, A large. square funnel that has a handle I can hook over the side of the sump stuffed with the media. Seems to be working really well! Sorry to my star, I hope it recovers![]()
