    Insanely red sponge!!!

I first saw this sponge three weeks ago. It came in on a piece of LR at a LFS. It was pretty small. Stopped in today and WOW. It had grown considerably and the color under MH was insane.

I had to have a piece of that!!! The manager broke off a piece and gave it to me.

Here it is after acclimation and a couple of hours to settle in. I think the standard T5 bulbs that come with the Nova light suck. Going to have to find some better bulbs.

Anyway, the sponge is doing great so far. It's all puffed up like normal.

    Slashed tang 48 hour report.

After 2 days the gash is looking better.

You may not be able to see the improvement in the pic. New meat is beginning to fill the gapping hole.

Here's as close to a head-on shot as I could get to show the thickness of this fish. It should give you an idea as to how deep the slash went.

Wow. That healing is amazing! Those offending snails are definetely large . Got some in my tank, but fortunately my fish are pip-squeaks without the body mass to harm themselves against the rocks.

Love that red sponge too...after reading that last Coral magazine issue on Tunicates, I am really thinking of setting up a nutrient-rich species tank for sponges, tunicates and the like...that would be really interesting. I have an encrusting sponge in my DT that is orange and spreading, but without any particular surface detail.

I was going to mention that before, since I've read that you get far better PAR with other brands such as ATI, KZ, UVL, etc. More expensive, but better performance.

I like Reefgeek.com for their bulb selection, and always stop at the RC T5HO Q&A thread to lookup some good bulb combinations.

LMAO. Thanks V. When you have been in the hobby as long as me, you keep learning along the way and get as OLD as I am, you will have skills I can't even dream about at this time. The hobby keeps evolving, stay on top of it.

Those sharp calcium tubes projecting out from the rock are supposed to be a snail of some sort. I've taken a stout needle nose pliers and broken a few off corals over the sink and what comes out is a worm. Not sure why the "experts" call them a snail.

You called it Carmie. I knew the name but couldn't think of it at the time. I've since pulled out a coral frag one had attached to and took the needle nose pliers to it. It had killed the coral area it was attached to, an area of 1/4 by 1/2".

As Shimek states in his article, "The upper edge of this tube may be razor sharp, and may inflict rather nasty cuts."

    Happy reefing?

    Tang Healed.

OK, got busy, went to MACNA, got back a couple of days ago. Here’s the latest pic of the Tang...

It’s barely visible but you can see a thin line where the cut was.

    Incredible!

    Time to update this thread.

Wow, it’s been five months since my last update. First, a tragic and unexplained loss. Anyone following this thread knows I was fortunate to find a wild hybrid Amphiprion thiellei, shown below...

He had bonded with my A. percula, shown in the same pic. One day he was missing. Never found a trace!

It didn’t take long for my A. ocellaris to take up with the perc...

And life moves on. The Black Ocellaris...

looks a little lonely hosting by himself in the Branching Frogspawn.

The Zebrasoma desjardinii, Indian Ocean Sailfin Tang has grown to 5+” and the Sohal...

Acanthurus sohal to 7+”. Both piggy eaters. So much so that they pick at the edges of my Sarcophyton softies, GRRRRR!!! Making them look like this...

    As the culprits cruise by.

    Next, some coral updates.

    First, some coral growth comparisons.

    From June ’08 to...

February ’10 this coral looks to have quadrupled in size. If anyone has a clue to a name help me out. It is a Tyree LE coral that he no longer has listed. At least I couldn’t find it recently. Any guesses? I’ve looked in “Corals of the World” by Vernon without a positive match.

Next is a Pavona decussata. Not colorful but a good grower. Great for beginners.

    June of ‘08

As of a few days ago. I guess because it’s not colorful it isn’t popular. I seldom see it available. We’ll put some frags on the web site when the aquaculture building is ready.

Next, a Green Nepthia softie received as a door prise at a local club meeting back in early ’08. This coral’s original size was only the size of one of the arms pictured here. It was not very robust for months and I thought, it will never make it.

Well I was wrong. Above, after at least six months of TLC.

And now in a recent picture, representing nearly two years growth. We’ll get to fragging this popular softie, too.

    More tomorrow.
