that is so cool...i don't know that i will ever have clams....but they sure are neat
you can use this to your advantage, as its actually a good way to gauge the health. if you put your hand over the tank shading it from the light, it should respond b starting to close, or to close.. they will usually quickly open back up, but can be used to gauge there responsiveness..Originally Posted by Amphibious

Hey Amphibious! Great thread and awesome photos! What are you using to take them?
Also, your clams, how are they doing? I would love to have clams in the future, but I have not even researched anything on them. Do they do well in the reef environment? What, if any, are the special requirements?
Absolute wonders of Mother Nature and evolution. Here's one of them. A slug so ugly he's cute. Consumes his weight in algae every second. Well, at least it seems that way. If there's a mat of algae and he slides through it he leaves a clean path. Amazing!!!Originally Posted by cheng21tang

A Crocea clam. One of two. The other is laying on his side tonight and I didn't feel like moving the light fixture and getting my arm wet to the pit. There's also a lettuce nudebranch in the pic.

i absolutely love that color, i can't believ how rich it is
you know, i think those nudebranches are so pretty, but i swear i read someplece that they would devour corals.....am i mistaken on that?.....cause if i am, i am definately getting a couple
dreams-
it is spp specific to what they eat. nudi's are some of the pickiest critters i know

i've heard nudibranchs don't live very long either. usually only a year inside an aquarium.

Yes and no. There are nudibranchs that eat coral but not the Lettuce nudibranch. Actually, nudibranchs as a group are some of the more difficult animals to keep alive in captivity. Most of them die in a month or two by waisting away from starvation. The Lettuce Nudi is supposed to eat hair algae and I had such a beautiful growth of algaes, meaning several kinds, that I thought I'd try them. They go about grazing on the rocks and so far seem to be doing fine. It's been a month since I bought them. AdamJ is right about them being picky eaters. Most should stay in the ocean. Cheng too, is correct. If you get a year out of them consider yourself lucky. Under reef conditions Nudies are not long lived.Originally Posted by dreams

Amphibious, i was told that the lettuce nudibranchs are not actually found in the reef but rather in lagoons. do you know that to be true?
well.... um... ya....
there are reefs in lagoons........
and these fine critters are found on reefs
(doesnt matter if the reef is in a lagoon or not)
but also have been found in lagoons and in mangroves as well.... gee they are just all over

there's so different parts of the reef.... you got the mangrove swamps, fringing reef, patch reefs, lagoon, seagrass beds, reef flat, back reef, groove channel, reef crest, and finally the big daddy the fore reef.
and then after that you have different types of reefs either continental, or oceanic reefs. and you talking about diversity in each. but still you will find the same creatures in a little bit of everywhere.

Hi Dick
We miss you up here in Wisconsin. Your tank is looking great, just as I expected. I can't believe you have my three favorite tangs. Good luck with them; if any one can do it, you can. Keep us posted, it's been a very informative thread.

Hi Sheila,
Good to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words.
I meant to post a note before I left FL for a fishing trip to Canada but forgot and left my lap top at home, darn. I'm in Duluth, MN at a motel that has internet service.
So everyone, I'll be incognito for about a week. I'll not be posting until I get back.

Lets all give Dick lots of hugs and kisses. I know he had a few tragic events happen while he was out of town and I will let him post about that when he is ready.
Dick we love you. So sorry to hear about your critters, but knowing you give them the best possible care one can imagine, it's not your fault and nature just runs it's course sometimes, and unfortunately it was in your tank. *hugs hugs hugs* *kisses kisses kisses* xoxoxo
There's something in a simple hug
That always warms the heart;
It welcomes us back home
And makes it easier to part.
A hug's a way to share the joy
And sad times we go through,
Or just a way for friends to say
They like you 'cause you're you.
Hugs are meant for anyone
For whom we really care,
From your grandma to your neighbor,
Or a cuddly teddy bear.
A hug is an amazing thing -
It's just the perfect way
To show the love we're feeling
But can't find the words to say.
It's funny how a little hug
Makes everyone feel good;
In every place and language,
It's always understood.
And hugs don't need new equipment,
Special batteries or parts -
Just open up your arms
And open up your hearts.
