The Hawaiian Black Trigger fish, Melichthys niger is a beautiful fish but not reef safe in a closed system. Here's what I found through Google.

They grow to 12" and would be the terror of the tank, in my humble opinion.

Triggers are typically large AND aggressive. Definitley dominate fish candidate. They will also nip at corals. Fine if you are creating a FOWLR tank with aggressive inhabitants (like a Lion fish, Parrot fish, etc.). Probably not the best choice for a reef tank though. Amp is quite right, a potential terror.
How did I ever wind up here?

i dont have a niger trigger, i have a picassio, but< I'll use the "BUT" word, they are pretty much all the same! peck this , crush that, chase this, hydrolic jet that!
u get the point anyways from a reef setting stand-point! although definately less destructive than some of the other family members, they make great eddition with other hardy fish! sometimes fish 10 times there size! even eels make suitable tank mates! basicly any preditor u add to FO tank the triggers rarely end up being the ones harrassed!

might be just my animals temperment, i had to physiclly barrier silver coloured fish that were under actinic lighting, the reflection seems to drive trigger into a destruction /killer freazy!
