    rec. size of fuge

i am setting up a 125 gal tank and i am planning to keep a pair of mandarin dragonets and a pair of genicanthus watanabi ( i believe that is right) i hear that they are planktivores so i figure i would need a sizeable fuge. recommendations are appreciated.

I believe in, the bigger the better when it comes to refugiums. What I do is make a sump as large as possible, put partitions in it as I want them and incorporate a DSB in the largest chamber and use that as my refugium. Because you are planning on housing planktivore eating fish you need to concentrate on having enough space to grow the plankton. What I do is have a designated area in the sump/refugium and put small shells there for the little critters to grow out to maturity, breeding along the way and growing in numbers. They will make it up to the tank through the pump. Some will not make it through the pump alive but enough do to populate the tank.

Here's a link to my tank thread - http://www.talkingreef.com/forums/showthread.php?t=412 - Surf through there. You will find the info on what I'm refering to.

Definately bigger=better. Calculate where to split your sump for your return pump/skimmer etc and use the required space for each and use any remaining space for the fuge.

BIGGER is always better. LOL. If you are doing a 125gal, and if you plan on creating you own sump, then you want to place the largest container possible under the stand (if that's were you plan on keeping it). As for sumps there are many different styles and types on the web you can draw ideas from.

While I agree bigger is better as a typical male I over achieved on my 75 gallon display. I put in a 300 gallon plastic container for a sump/fuge in the garge directly behind our dining room. I still havent partitioned it yet but it still looks the same except for a few changes since I took this pic.

The upside is all the things you would think about plenty of pods and stability the downside is dosing but thats a pretty small problem.

Try you local bargain finder for old tanks that were used for fishkeeping, you usually can get a steal.
