on the rise bud, your on the rise.
woohoo, all my parameters are in check except for nitrates :s But hey, considering i couldnt keep any snails alive, i expected that...
Levels that i check today
Salt level- 1.020 (little low but im topping off with salt water instead of RO/DI)
Ammonia- 0 ppm
nitrite- 0 ppm
PH- bout 7.8
nitrate- 15 ppm
I spotted a couple strands of chaeto in my fuge area so i slapped my nano cube lights on the fuge and now have them running. A fellow reefer said i could come over with a plastic zip-lock bag and take as much chaeto as i want, so i'm not depending on these strands to grow into anything huge.
Either way, i am excited to get some little micro-critters in my tank, that was always one of my favorite parts of the hobby
Work all day today so i'm prolly gonna get the chaeto tomorow
After that i'm pretty much gonna coast and let things be. In two weeks i am going skiing in quebec for the first time so i can't really go out spending money left and right. Even though, now thinking about it (food(y),salt(y),clean ro/di cartridges(y),water tests(y)), i have nothing to spend money on
happy reefing

Don't think i have ever been so excited to get chaeto as i am now
Going to go over at 7:30 with a zip-lock bag and come home with chaeto wooooooo
The couple strands that i spotted when i put the cube lights on have probably doubled in length overnight? My guess is they were enjoying the nitrates i had to offer

So i felt like turning on the halides today instead of the flourescent bulb and wow, i forgot i bright and blue they make the tank
Also the guy i went to see had a really nice 180, 100 gallon dedicated fuge, pretty much full of chaeto, so i got lots of it
He was annoyed with some green striped mushrooms so he FORCED them on me, So they are now in my fuge under my cube lights with my new chaeto.
Overall, it is a good night for me, i love the beginning
Also snapped some pictures of the new rockuascape (like aquascape but with rocks lol, new word for your dictionaries ). noticed i pretty much completely changed the center of the tank from a pile of rocks close to the glass, to a very large open space, since the thing i disliked most about the other configuration was not having room for clams
Either way, enjoy
Threw some extra pics in there, guess what i'm doing

Nice! The tank and the ski photos! I love to ski. I am hopeful that next year I will be able to walk well enough to go again.

Through my community band. The band committee interviewed people based on their leadership skills and volunteer experience and then sent those applications of to the olympic committee. From there the olympic committee chose 10 people from the band and i was one of them
Pretty darn cool when you think about it

OKAY,
so things have been headed down hill long enough its time for change.
I came upon the realization that 50+ hours a week and not spending any of it on hobbies (car stereo, car itself, aquarium) or anything fun will still not give me enough money to avoid taking out a loan for school this year. So, i am just going to save half of my paycheck to pay off my student loan and start spending the other half on fixing my car, finishing my sound system (in the car), maybe buying a trumpet, and returning my aquarium to its final glory. Any left over will go into paying off my loan.
SO,
at this point i think i only have my clown left (goby dissapeared recently ) so i am going to remove him from the DT and put him into my Nano cube 12 for a bit.
I just made a new stand for a completely dedicated fuge last weekend and had the tank drilled to allow it to flow into my current sump/Fuge. This will allow me to have each overflow from the DT to flow into its own sump/fuge without any obstructions (plumbing wise.... i have like 7 90 deg elbows in my DT drain line lol).
This will result in not turning down my sump return pump to a point where it allows about 20% through or the DT overflows and only half of the DT water being skimmed. (fuge tank will overflow directly into the sump pump section straight into the DT).
I am also going to make some sort of baffle or overflow for my circ pump intake becuase it was always getting clogged with gravel or other crap. As well, it was dangerous for the fish.
Hopefully i can get this all done relatively quickly so i can get mr.clown back home quick.
Working so much makes me a weekend warrior so i will take pics and give updates as they come.
Peace
Josh

Just an update
Booted up my nano and got the clown in (he swam right into my transfer container), and that is running great.
My goby is still in my display (spent a couple days devoting my spare time to catching him), still no luck. So right now he is in there with just a heater and pump for circulation.
I am going to try to outsmart him with some different traps becuase i need to get into the display and modify some things, and i can't do any of it with him in there.
As far as plumbing goes, i finished the stand for the dedicated fuge, drained and moved the old sump, and plumbed everything together. Looks very promising, now i just need to get rid of my goby so i can do my water tests and finish the work i have to do in the dt.
When im done ill post pics,
Pce

SOUNDOFF, need opinions
As it sits right now, both my old sump, and my display tanks are both covered in dirt, and lets call it "aqua-dust" (patents pending). In the display, the rocks and the bed are pretty much covered.
Would there be any benefit, rather, would the benefits outweigh the issues, to vacuuming out the sandbed and the rock work, or should i just leave all that for the cycle process?
Thanks
Josh

Is it actual dust or is it dust from your sandbed? If its actual dust I would clean it out so that way its not floating around in your tank and gumming up your equipment.

its pretty much the detritus that snails and crabs havent been taking care of for the past year...
UPDATE:
I CAUGHT THE FRIGGIN GOBY!!! Just put some food in a clear tupperware jar and laid it on the sand bed. Waited for him to go into it and then i snuck up and stuck a net to cover the end and pulled the jar out of the water. What a successful day!!
He is now in my Nano-Cube 12 with my clown. I plan on fattening him up and then bringing him to my lfs to trade for snails or supplies or something...
Now i have the weekend to finish plumbing and work on my DT without having to worry about him. WOOOOOHOOO

All params sitting comfy at ~0.
Definitely went to my LFS and impulse bought some frags Xenia, Green Star polyps, and water melon Zoas. All opened up after about 20 minutes in the nano and all are about 1.5" in diameter. For $20 i'd say i did well
Pics later

Here are the promised pics.
Just filling the main 120 system now to test out the plumbing.
I moved some of the rock yesterday to get to the closed-loop pump intake and found that the sand bed had crept up and covered the bottom half of it, and the top was caked in crap and snail shells.
SO, i took a 13" piece of plastic eaves trough and wrapped it in eaves trough grating, and stuck that in front of the intake (i removed all of the sand from the bottom as well.
This will help in a couple of ways:
- It will spread out the intake vacuum, meaning it will be less likely for fish and stuff to get sucked to the intake, thus blocking off flow.
- Relocates a majority of the suction about 5" from the surface, rather than the bottom behind the rock.
- Easily Cleanable
- Eaves trough grate means fast growing corals will be able to mount to it and grow.
When the water clears up i will take a pic or two of that as well
The attached pics of are the nano i have set up right now. My Xenia and Zoas are doing very well but my green star polyps have not openned since the first day.
I'm going to get some Snails and Crabs for a CUC soon and keep my fingers crossed the goby doesn't eat them. Either way, he is starting to put some bulk back on so i will be able to sell him, maybe trade him into the LFS for something. He has always been way to aggresive for other fish and even the CUC, so no good for me.
Enjoy

Oh yeah, included is also a quick pic of my new sump and fuge setup. I can definitely see the plumbing changing, but i will do the initial test with what i have available, and if i need to change it up, i will

Just finished the fill and ran the system, WOOT
Soooooooo much flow from just the return. I always had it turned down by more than 50% so its surprising to me what it looks like unrestricted.
Better yet MY OVERFLOWS ARE HANDLING IT NOW!!!!
Only issue now is an overflow for the new fuge (and maybe a bit more leveling) so it doesn't flood my sumpw when power goes out.
The circulation system is nuts, turned the DT into a whirlpool, lol, awesome....
I'll wait to get her cleaned up and post some pics.
ANDDDD
I moved my GSP up in the tank and they openned today. Great extension from all frags!!!

Turns out i dont have any changes to make!!
the Loc-line return nozzles were under water, so they siphoned off an extra 2" from the DT into my sump
