MAN lucky duck! i wish my mom was like that...
** (when i started my tank) walks into lfs...hey mom..i need to get a refugium and one of those protein skimmers...
--but mark ..does so and so have that?

    -- well no..
--then you dont need it mark.. her tank is beautiful..what does she have?

    -- a wet dry filter..

-- well your tank came with one of those built in..so you dont need to spend any money..

--but she has an algae problem..she even said so..

    --but her tank looked great..

and after probably days worth of arguing and persistence and persuading..i now own a fuge and skimmer .

lol, see the thing about my parents is, they'll buy me stuff (i have to make them believe i need it, i do, but i have to make them think so), and then as we set it up, my dad will quiz me on what this does, and what that does. i got my skimmer a while ago and he still doesnt think that i need it XD For example. today i had to explain to him the benefits of an ro/di system, and how it works. (works very fast btw, had a 21g reservoir filled in about 3 hrs)

I have it setup, hangin on a wall and he walks in, looks at all the hoses, picks up the concentrate hose and compares it to the pure hose, and asks me how that works

But, with my trusty TDS meter, i showed him that our house water was 156 ppm (if thats really high the glass i used must ahve been dirty :s) and that the filtered water was 0ppm. but all is well.

so as of today, my skimmer is patched up (bottom fell of), my ballasts and fixtures are wired (very neatly may i add), my stand is sitting level, and my fixtures are almost ready to be hung. I cut the dividers for the sump, and yeah.

On tomorows agenda (i have no school), finish hanging the light fixtures. silicone the dividers in place, plumb the tank, and wait for everything to cure :'(

I have no idea why the lights were the first thing we did, but my dad insisted. Personally, i think we should have plumbed the tank first, had it drying today, do the wet test tomorow as we work on the lights.

But either way, it should all be done soon, so woohoo.

(i also bought 2 40lb bags of aragonite sand, 1 40lb bag of crushed coral, and 1 30lb bag of arag-alive sand. Between the fuge and Dt im hoping thats enough for a decent sand bed :s )

I really wish i knew where the camera cable is cuz i have tons of pictures for you guys. Will upload as soon as i find it

    lol, that blows.

invest in a tds unit, test your house supply to make sure its not perfect, then do a test for your mom. Lets say your water is 105ppm

You show your mom, "THAT'S 105 REASONS MY TANK ISNT PERFECT" then run away crying. It'll work like a charm

    Update

    very true.

    Update for today.
We did not do any plumbing for the tank,
    Instead we

    • Re-siliconed the sump
    • Siliconed the sump dividers in place
    • hung and levelled the light fixtures
    • cut styrofoam and placed the tank on its stand
    • rounded off the sharp edges of the holes (to prevent the ice age/squirrel theory, didnt want a little crack spreading once under pressure)
    • replaced all fitting/bulkheads and loc-line
    • went to rona, home depot, and the pet store about 5 times lol

So, i will leave everything to dry and cure, and as i will be making the most awesome subs known to mankind tomorow, i will continue with the plumbing on wednesday, i may even upload some pics if u all are good

    ZOMGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, an update :p

Well, plumbings done, it is very clean, and was done very slowly.

However, it is now leaking from every place possible.
There are 3 90' elbows that are leaking, leaking from 2 bulkheads, leaking in and out of the circ pump.

Thats just the circulation system. I havent even started up the entire sump and return part yet

On the bright side, my sump has been holding water fully for the past 4 days, not a leak at all (which is good considering i redid the silicone )

So my next steps are: Buy more glue, rip apart the circ system, start over.

so close, but yet so far.

Btw, i know i promised pics, but i camera is too snooty, it does not take anything but duracell batteries (very weird)

there are stands that pitch the speakers off the floor slightly. the design is such that it can limit gound vibration. however projecting speakers or rather limiting dirrect wavelengths can be achieved by placing molded perspex half domes in front of your outputs. But once again, livestock toterances have varying tolerances.

oh, lol, u ar replying to my post made like 10 months ago XD

I've actually moved around my whole basement (yupp, thats how important my tank is )

So now, at the end of the basement (it is a long rectangle) is a pair of L shaped desks, making a U shape. In the middle of this U shape against the wall is my tank. the surround system has been moved accross the basement so i dont have to worry about it much more, but i did read your post, thats very cool, good thing to know for any future tanking

    More things going wrong...

Well, after i got home from school today, i went downstairs and heard my MJ 900 sucking air. So as i turn the corner, i step[ in water and see my tupperware container half empty with half the rocks above water... Yippee

Gonna try to get to a home hardware for some couplings and glue to finish my plumbing.

(maybe batteries so i can upload pics)

well, after a long weekend, it is done. No leaks, minor hitches but im done with that now, rock and sand is in, and guess what

    I HAVE PICS FOR YOU!!!!!!!!

Notice the protein-skimming action a MJ 900 with air hose will do for you

But yes, that is my temporary rock setup.

now we have a picture fot eh tank on stand, the tank with sand in it, the rocks all laid out, a picture of my little brother (bout 4' tall) next to the tank, me (6' tall) next to the tank for scale. My apologies though, i did not take a picture of the tank without water in it for the aquascaping. IM surprised that 180 lbs of rock hardly reaches halfway up the tank. So i will be getting more next week.

That last picture is of the tank at this moment.

Btw, i find it funny how blue these lights are. I will walk into another rooma nd everything seems yellow. The tank is also by my computers, and i have a gaming LED keyboard. So the keys glow blue. However, with the lights on, the keyboard looks green, its funny .

the one hitch im having right now is that every 10 seconds or so, the overflow will empty and bubbles will emerge from the pipe emptying into the sump. the water levels are stable, its just kind of annoying

Heres a couple of pics for you.

My best guess would be all the decline in elevation?? water is speeding up and cant keep up or something.

If thats the case andit needs to be levelled (im kicking myself at the moment lol), ythe case only needs to be drained an inch or two to allow me to change this (it will still be a major pain in the butt though

did a little fiddling with the piping, Now im surely kiccking myself. It appears that the dealer did not give me the correct overflows or something, so all that needed to happen is for my 1200 to get tuned down a bit (which is bull because the Overflows were supposed to run 800 gph each) But anywho, i took out all the little plumets and levelled all the piping (only took me an hour, but still grr...) and yeh. So now ilkl just leave it running for a bit to ensure the gurgling stopped for good (pics'll come when clears up... Din't settle overnight)

lol mark, yupp thats me lol.

I know ive been taking things slow, but thats when thigns dont get screwed up as much. Should be full steam ahead (well, at a regular speed, dont worry, i wont skip the cycle) from now on.

Cycle is prolly going to take a lot longer than expected, there are ALOT of dead corals on this rock that i was not expecting, as well as macro algae that is just beggining to decay (boy does it smell up the basement lol)

Becuase of all the decay taking place, would there be any benefit to running the skimmer?? i know most dont do it, but seeing that i have dead coral all over mine, maybe its different?? iunno, thnx for the replies.

running the skimmer will pull all of that junk from the water, I ran mine during the cycle and you'll be shocked at how much it pulls out...
