I have a 37g tank that was previously used for FW. I'm not sure if any copper (or anything else harmful?) was ever dosed in it. Anyway, I was hoping to use it to mix up saltwater for water changes and maybe as a quarrantine/hospital tank. Would there be concerns about the copper for this short term use? I figure the water change water would be in there 24hr max. And new or injured fish or inverts would be in for a limited time and only one or a couple specimens so a loss would be minimized. It'd be a nice tank to use for these purposes. I might be able to contact the former owner and inquire about it, but does anyone have any opinions on the matter?

it would work great for a QT tank. as for making up SW for your display, i would imagine that it would be ok, but im not sure... i have never done any testing or read anything about it, so i cant say for sure

I don't know how much copper, if any, would leach into your water in 24 hours. But, if it did, over a period of time you could have copper build up in your display tank and cause problems. You could ask the prior owner but they may not know how many treatments contain CU and tell you no just because the name of the product didn't say "copper". IMO, I would use it for a QT tank where you might be dosing CU anyway. They you just would not have to worry about it.

Wouldn't the normal water changes help minimize build up? Especially from whatever small amount gets in from tainted silicon in the mixing tank...

yes it would, but even a very small amount can kill most inverts

Plus if you were still mixing it in the same tank you would be adding back about as much as you took out. Top off water doesn't dilute the mineral content because the minerals don't evaporate.
