waste water is dependent on the water pressure that u have available and the temperature of the water. 2-3 times waste water per gallon produced is common.

yeah, a lot people use it for their garden. how to store the waste water? also over time, the water may be too rich in certain minerals.

I save our waste water in a 55 gallon plastic barrel next to the cloths washer and the wife uses it for filling the initial wash cycle.

what units do you folks use. im assuming units where you can buy the replacement filters and membranes from home depot are the best bet right.

there are a lot of silicates in our water here, so a lot of folks eventually end up with a KENT Hi-S or Hi-S Maxxima. i don't know what is special with the membrane, but it does hold a patent and all my friends swear by it.......including those who already own one from HD.

    pham,

Here's a link to the unit I bought. I think Rob has this unit also, maybe others here on TR. I personally wouldn't spend more because the components are the same. The most important component is the RO membrane. The best is TFC membranes made with material from DOW Chemical. This unit has that membrane. It works for me.

What do these rodi things hook up to exactly? Is it something i need to crawl under my sink to install, or can i hook it up to the hose for the (clothes) washer? I am thinking about getting an rodi thing, up to now i have been using distilled water from the store (not a cheap plan, btw) in my discus tank. Also, what sort of maintenance are we looking at with these things? Will i need to keep a stock of filter membranes handy, or is one going to last me awhile?

    Welcome to TR

RODI units can be hooked up in many ways. I do it the hard way and hook it up to the sink everytime I need it. Some people have a fish room with a sink and have an auto hook up installed. I've also seen them hooked up in laundry rooms like u mentioned. Anything is possible as long as u have a cold water source.

Maintenance will depend on your tap water. After a year and a half with the same filters, I was getting 0 for my TDS, but my tap only has 40 TDS on average. If have have dirtier tap water, it will dirty your filters faster.

yesh, as gwen mentioned there are many ways to hook them up.
personally, mine is connected to my cold water line using a saddle clamp

and yes, the membranes need to be replaces, all filters should be replaced about once a year. but as gwen stated that doesnt apply to everyone. the more RO water you produce, and how hard it has to work to filter the water makes the difference. my tap water is about 120 TDS and my filters are done after 12-13 months

(TDS=Total Dissolved solids, a measurement of water purity, proper RO/DI system wil produce water at 0-5 TDS)

and yes, Mr blubber (Fat Walrus) is right, there are adapters for kitchen sinks, laundry tubs, and as i use, clamps to pipe it directly into your water lines

I have this RODI unit. http://cgi.ebay.com/Aquarium-RO-2-DI...QQcmdZViewItem

It looks just like the one Amphibious and Rob use. Just recieved my TDS1 by Hanna. The reading I got are some what shocking. My tap water is 300 ppm. After the RODI it's 9-11 ppm. After the dual DI you would expect the TDS to check at 0 ppm. Is this water safe to use? (not that it matters since I have been using it for awhile now)

The unit is just over 3 months old and maybe 400 gallons of water ran through it. Should I replace the filters? If so should I use the same manufacture as the unit or look elsewhere? Scrap the unit you get what you pay for type of thing?

As much as I pay for city water here I really expected to have better TDS. Guess I shouldn't have put off buying the TDS meter.
