    Welcome to TR Brian

Phosphates can come from a variety of sources. If you can give us a little background on your tank, I'm sure we can try to help.

    How often do you feed?
    What size tank?
    How many fish?
How are you maintaining the tank?
What type of filtration do you have?

There is a tank projects forum- please feel free to show off your tank if you wish.

welcome to TR, sorry to hear about your losses during the hurricane. well, sorry about the hurricane itself. were you in New Orleans? did you have to evacuate?
if you are mixing your salt, test your water source. if you are using premade or NSW, test those also.

Why not try a phosphate reactor? They are relatively inexpensive. I use the one made my Two Little Fishes. The media I use is RowaPhos. I have had excellent results with using it.
Buy captive raised corals and fish. One small fish can make a big splash!!

yep, sounds like a good plan. cause once the B_load hits u could be slugged by a few problems. its all out limitation on intake sources, and exportantion to the best of your abilities! we can only aim to achieve this, sometimes it takes using your mellon as well as your wallet!

veriann: They can be placed in the sump or hang on the tank. You can use other media in them besides phosphate remover. I use one on a system I have at work and run carbon in it. Kent also makes one too. They are very similiar but TLF one has a control valve on it. Thanks for the welcome.

before you buy a phosphate reactor, what type of water are you using for your top off. tap or ro? using tap water can definately cause your phosphates to rise.

well, im gonna jump in late. but here are a few things i want to mention.

test the water. next time you get water from that store, test it with a PO4 test kit, that might be your source.

im assuming since there is no livestock you are not feeding anything, so just let us know of anything you have put in your tank since last starting it up other than water and salt (assuming you just restated it)

good idea, ro-di water is aways best if you make it yourself and use it immediately.

i also use ro water from a machine outside my local super market. 50 cent a gallon. im pretty close to the owner of the machine and i see him changing cartrages and mantaining it every month. that brings me some peace of mind but i still test the ro water once a month.
