    Pincushion Urchin

I mixed up Pincushion Urchin, Blue Tuxedo safe for reef tank or not?

    Liveaquaria.com said it's reef compatible.
Marinedepotlive.com said it may damage polyps and corals.

any suggestion or experinced about Urchins?

i have a pincushion urchin and am returning him......he is reef safe, but unfortunately, he is eating all my coraline algae.....also, he keeps getting my ricordeas suck to him (they are just starting to attach) and runs them over.....so, i have to remove them & put them back.....also, he has knocked down my frogspawn a dozen times....til it was spitting up (looks better now)

i really think it is a gorgeous creature, just too much of a pain for me

I have a blue tux in my 26 Bowfront. It eats macro algae, hair algae, and yes, coraline algae. In a well established tank, with lots of coraline growth, their effect should be minimal. With proper water parameters, coraline should be vigerous and the generation of new algae will be greater than that which is consumed by the urchin.

I've not heard of ANY stories that state a pincushion is not reef safe. They are NOT a friend of frags and WILL carry ANYTHING from empty shells to polyps on their backsides.

i like the look of the pencil variety. looks like a star exploding. but i wouldn't get them unless the tank can properly handle their needs, also they tend to mass spawn, im wondering how that effects the rest of the tank

As you notice I'm not living in US. In Tehran there are two major lfs and you could find every fishes, corals, inverts from Indo Pacific very cheap and healthy I think you could get Purple Tangs in US around 70$, I bought mine 12$ but Yellow Tangs because they are not living in Indo-Pacific are expensive (65$) and . . . another thing I want to mention is I'm using Europe brands such as Sera and Aqua-Medic and they do very nice job to me.
