was the thought just to leave the lights off but the filtration running?? that is what I would do.
Just a thought, but I am considering allowing my tank to be dark for a week. I have removed the fish and only have my cleanup crew in it. I had gotten a pretty bad algae problem that I just about have kicked. I will be out of town and thought if I leave the lighst off maybe it will finish it off. Plus the wife won't need to worry about dealing with it?

Yes run the filter but no lights. Thanks
As long as you don't have any corals in there I don't see a problem with leaving the lights out.
