actually all tangs can be tempermental. the sailfin is a beutiful and hardy fish and they can get quite large, 110 is enough space id say. my favorite is the red sea sailfin.

sailfins need big tanks, i think 125 is that accepted minimum for them, but you could probably pull it off in a 110

i have a lot of open swim space......i am just wondering if it would bother my jawfish

The Michael Scott book says that this fish is the least aggressive in this genus and family, but may be agressive toward it's own kind.
if i wanted to try a fish like this.....would my best bet be let everyone settle in for a while and then get a juvenile?.......i plan on having a really docile tank.....so, i don't want anyone freaked out by a larger quicker fish

if this will be your most aggressive fish, which it sounds like it would be, then yes let everyone get situated and territories established before you introduce Mr Big Bad Tang
thanks gwen:-)

try to get a red sea sailfin(disjardini). they are much more colorful, tend to be less agressive, and will eat bubble algae. go for a real red sea one, not persian gulf or indian ocean...they tend to wash out inn color.

thanks walrus
i have been reading about these guys....some sites actually suggest a 180g tank.....i dunno
i was gunna get scott's fairy wrasse, but then saw a loubout's (which i fell in love with)....then, decided that w/ wanting a dragonette, maybe a wrasse is a bad idea
so, i guess, i am just lost and confused...eh!....i would like one larger fish, but nothing that is going to cause me or my other critters issues later on

take your time. but if you ask me, you'll see that sailfin a lot more and they are much easier than fairies. i bought a harem of scott's (one alpha male and 6 females, they were so shy they would not come out to eat and all died frm starvation.Originally Posted by dreams

oh, sry to hear that.....you know, there is/was a scott's at my LFS and now that you say that, he only darted out and back in.....you really didn't get to watch him swim, stayed in the rocks

i think the loubout will be a better choice, they stay smaller and tend to less shy. it will be a much smaller bio-load anyway. i personally think they are better looking than scott and flashes much better.Originally Posted by dreams

do you think it will be too much competition for food for a dragonette, tho?....that was my concern w/ the wrasses

I agree with Walrus.Originally Posted by fat walrus
I have a Red Sea desjardinii and I really like her. She eats from my fingers and is quite tolerant of the other residents namely, a yellow wrasse and my surviving clownfish. She's "assertive" but not overly aggressive. This week I introduced a little hippo tang who had just finished his quarantine. After her inital "this is my tank and you better get in line" posturing, the sailfin now ignores the newcomer. I have a 110 gallons setup with lots of space to swim around.
Just my two cents. I hope this helps.

My experiences are opposite. My regal tang beats up on my desjardini to where his fins were nipped way back. The new larger tank has helped and her fins are coming back but the aggression is there.

That's why I said my experiences were opposite.
okay, i see what you are saying. i was focused on the discussion about the agression level of the desjardini itself.Originally Posted by thrlride
