If you just go at the stuff in a wholesale manner, you're likely going to end up with another problem with either cyano, diatoms, or dinoflagellates. All of that nuisance algae is feeding on SOMETHING (nitrogenous waste (ammonia/nitrates), phosphates).
You'll want to cut back your photoperiod, change out a lot of water, cut back on your feeding, etc. You can manually remove SOME of the stuff, but go slowly so you don't end up with other algae issues.

How is your tank testng? (the answer is not "fine", numbers mean a lot). However, with that much growth, you may get false low numbers because the algae is feeding on NH3, NO3, and/or PO4.
