If you can pick the clam up, remove it from the water and gently scrub the algae off the shell. If you could provide a picture, that would help.

Hey thanks for the help Dick is it safe to remove a clam into the air or should I keep him in a container of the tank water to do this?
I realize its best to do out of my tank in order to keep it from spreading.

    Thanks Black

Clams can withstand a short period of time out of water without harm. As a precaution, I would have a dish of tank water, I use a gallon ice-cream container (empty of ice cream of course) , to let him sit in while doing this procedure. Be prepared to get squirted with water in protest to your cleaning job.
