    Something looks like a Copepod....

I found this thing stalking my Ricordea today. Is this a problem?

It's about as big as a swashed pencil eraser, clear, just appeared today in a very open area. in moderate flow with high light.

Picture is too fuzzy to tell. Back away with the camera. Stay within the minimum focus distance of the lens and try again.

Well, I guess its not Aiptasia. It has gone out of sight for now.

What it looked like was one of the fossils you would find in limestone oval in shape with 2 antennae and legs on all sides. The body had no bulk to it. It was clear. The thing looked like it could be an anemone but it walked like a bug.

I checked Chuck's Addiction and Melev's Reef to identify and didn't see anything there that matched.

My I-phone doesn't do well with up closes photos. I'll try to get another pic if he surfaces again.

My Ricordea doesn't look to be effected by anything at this point but I am going to keep an eye on it.

    Thanks for that link SaltyDawg,

From there I found the most similar to be a Isopod - Munnid. Not an exact match but close. My critter seemed to be larder than the images they have in the description. I know I have Isopods in the tank as they gather every night on one wall to discuss their daily activity or something. They don't like the right wall of the tank for some reason. Perhaps they are watching the TV.

Anyhow, if the critter in my tank is a isopod thats good I believe. Recall the alarms. I am growing enough food for a Mandarin Goby to thrive in a few months.

OK, I have taken a new photo of this thing, I have changed my mind as to it being a Isopod.

It reappeared in the SAME location it was in when I first saw it. Like a Feather Duster that had drawn itself in and then come out again. As I write this I have turned off all the tank lights and it is not showing. But the photo was taken just a few moments before I killed the lights.

Again I apologize for the photo quality My I-phone will never be confused with a quality Nikon. But this is a better shot than the first.

I don't have a way to take a drawing and upload it.

The creature is not showing today. If it does I will try to get a better pic. You can see it in the one I took last night, it just isn't very sharp.

It's the silver looking blur that looks like someone shot a BB at the rock. I know that doesn't help much. Oh well I'll keep trying.

I occasionally see things like that on the sand in my 54. I think they are cryptic because usually I notice them right after rearranging the aquascape in areas that had been dark. I've never been able to get a decent image of one.

    Ok... It's BACK!

The ghost critter reappeared this afternoon in the same spot. I know it's laughing at me, ever defiant because it knows that I cannot prove he's really there. The dirty little so and so is winning the battle but I will win the war!

I took more pics. For some reason my phone wants to take poster sized pictures, so I will give you this link which will give you the album you can click through the 14 pics.

I found if you right click on the picture and save it to your desktop to view it is actually easier to see the critter.

The thing keeps popping up in the same place, never moves, like its a feather duster. An Isopod would travel around I would think. And it disappears instantly... like a Feather duster.

I'm stumped. And I have just about decided I will call it a Mattimus Whatisitius

It is possible it could be a tiny pest anemone like a majano but it doesn't look anything like mine. Does it come out during lights on or off? Also I wanted to ask if that was green bubble algae just down and right of your critter in question?

Well Salty I know how much you like a good mystery, but the critter has been removed from my tank. The ricordea actually shriveled up about a week after the last post was put up here.

I don't know if the critter had anything to do with the death or not but the ricordea was 2 - 1/4" across one day and less than 1/2" the next. I tried to watch it for a week to see if it was sick and would inflate again, no good. So I pulled the LR that had the critter and the ricordea out and have not replaced them.

Ricordea are supposed to be bullet proof, so I need to pay attention to my water conditions I think. For now I'm FOWLR. It sux!

Guess I gotta find something else to do tonight...lol. I got a couple red shrooms when I first started and they were fine for a couple months. They were 1 1/2" and one afternoon they shriveled up to about a pencil eraser size and fell off the rock. It was late and figured I'd get them out the next day. Next day couldn't find either one of them so I forgot about them. About three months later a red shroom peeked out of a hole...couldn't believe it. Today it's about 4" and the clowns call it home. Lately the clowns have been getting all crazy on the shroom. They lay on it next to each other and tail-slap it untill it shrinks to about 1" and when it expands they do it again. Maybe they are getting frisky with each other. It sure looks like the shroom doesn't appreciate it though. As for the other shroom that fell off...never saw it again. You should have given the ric more time. They can regenerate from very small piece of tissue.

I think I was so disgusted that I killed a bullet proof coral that I wasn't in any mood to wait a year to see if it was going to regenerate.

I intend to re-approach the Ricordea Garden plan in a month or so. I need to get a BTA for my clowns next. My sons have spoken it seems....

Matt, I don't remember when you started your tank but I would not put an anemone in a tank that is less than 6 months old.

Well that stinks... I started this tank in July. So I guess I need to wait a while. I'll be able to put one in there around January. Probably best anyway. I need to slow my roll a little, Christmas is coming, it's hard to gift wrap a new coral frag!
