    New guy

    Hello All,
I found the site while googling for info about reef tanks. I'm new to saltwater and just bought the JBJ 28 gallon CF quad. So I'm a work in progress. I have been researching a lot and have joined a couple of forums in the process. I joined this one because I was excited to see you have podcast. That's pretty cool. I'm listening to Rob now. So thank you folks for all the info in advance. Nice to meet you all.

Hey Francis, welcome to TR. You have found the best, most friendly reef forum on the web. As a Newbie, you will be tempted to get advice from your local fish store (LFS). Please, before acting on any advice from them bring your question here. LFS employees and even some owners are notorious for giving bad or outdated information. It could wind up costing you money better spent elsewhere. I know that is an oxymoron but it’s unfortunately true in most cases.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes.
I should start a tank journal on here maybe. I haven't actually given my tank a born on date because the hood is faulty and Foster & Smith are sending me a new one. Also my live rock & live sand aren't here yet. I have dry rock and sand, but have some live coming to seed it. I'm going to cure and cycle at the same time with some Purpleup. Right now I do have the water in it and have picked up a large, better media basket from InTank.com. My first upgrade
I used to work at a large fish and bird store Dick....so I know how some of those store folks can be. I have kept many freshwater tanks over the years. My favorite being my very personable Oscars and Jailbirds. I'm really enjoying the podcasts folks. Keep up the wonderful job! By the way...I hear Rob reading a chat room and taking calls during the shows live. Where is the schedule for that so i might join in the fun? I cannot find a link

Did you buy bagged live sand? If so return it asap and get more dry sand. Your rock will seed the sand anyway, bagged live sand is such a gimmick and waste of money.

As far as the purple up goes, you should not need it. It contains no coraline algae. Once your tank cycles completely keeping up with water changes will be more than sufficient. You will see coraline growth soon no need to rush it.

I agree with the above said^^^

There is no elevator to success in marine tanks. You have to take the stairs.

I was at a LFS, saw a sale associate sell "Live Water" to a customer for $5 a gallon lady bought 5 gallons, for the nano she just purchased. Sold her live sand as well, in a bag.

Basically sold her the water he took for the water change that day and some bagged wet sand that has been sitting for months on the shelf.

Point is most of the live sand sold has been sitting on the shelf for a very long time and the chance that there is anything still alive in there are slim at its best.

Yes....I read the same thing somewhere else. The live sand I have coming with the liverock is coming from Premiumaquactics. It is only a couple bucks a pound and I don't think it is the bagged stuff you see in the stores. As far as the Purple goes....I already have it, so I'll use it up and won't get anymore.
I am on the night shift right now and I'm still listening to the podcast on my smartphone. Good stuff. Any info on the live podcast schedule I asked about above?

    Best Regards,
    Gobby

When the site was upgraded to VB 4 the chat room was buggy. Rob is working on restoring it.
