Looking to buy for the 1st time

Well my 90 gallon has been up and running well for about 6 months now, always wanted to get a clam since i got back into the hobby. I am a little undereducated on clams and was wondering if anyone would suggest a good starter for me to look at. I am looking to buy a few months from now. Currently the only residents in the tank are some zoas, my frogspawn that is now splitting into 2 heads, and my green starburst polyps, had to modify this almost forgot my christmas tree worms that the lfs sold me for $10 "as live rock, cause the coral on the rock died", as well as my snails, 5 chiltons and 5 peppermint shrimp who ended the aptasia i had. As well as recommending a good starter clam could you also point me in the way of a book to add to my collection (Carmie this one is all yours!)

    Thanks
    Bobby

Sounds like things are progressing right along, Bobby. Clams are one of my favorite critters, too. You are one of the few wise aquarists that want to build a library of reference books BEFORE you venture into new territory. Congrats on that!

The best book on the market for clams is by James Fatherree titled, “Giant Clams in the Sea and the Aquarium”.

The book is not only a great picture reference but has all the up-to-date information on clams. As sponsor of Talking Reef we offer the book to TR members at a great price. You’ll find it here - Discounted Clam Book

Thanks Dick for all your help along the way, as well as everybody here on TR. I am very eager to get my first clam, been wanting to get one for a really long time. Dick I have to order a few Koralia's off of you. Need some more flow in the tank and my fuge and my cheap quarantine pump is shot so going to get a nano for that one, so i will pick the book up at that time as well.

Any suggestions on a good clam to start with?

    Bobby

Since their care are about the same, pick one with the color pattern you like. That’s about as hard as it gets. I would shy away from the really tiny ones, say 3” and under. They are more dependent on supplemental feeding than the larger ones.
