I'd look towards the urchin as well, if there's physical damage to the skeleton. If it's just flesh being stripped off, it's back to the drawing board.
I have had a montipora for close to 9 months now. It is the shelving type and has been growing at a very rapid rate. Recently I have seen a small edge on the one side nibbled on, then this morning the whole one side had be nibbled on. I have some suspects ,but am not sure. I have a Copperband Butterfly, but i thought they only hit softies, I have a Red Coris...he has teeth so I thought he could be suspect because it looks chewed, then the last guy is my Long Spine Sea Urchin, he is huge..more than a foot from one side to the other and must be getting hungry, he also has been around it a lot lately. Insight?

I picture of the coral and damage is worth a thousand words and a better possibility of finding the culprit.

Hope this helps, I think it is the urchin also because its too precise and there is a touch of algae that grows under the Monti.

I'm going with the urchin.

I think the urchin too. Can you put him in your sump and see if it stops?
