It appears to be a whelk of some type. For ID purposes, it would be best to remove it from the water and shoot a top-down pic, a side-view pic, and most importantly, a pic of its underside showing the operculum (opening).

If you're wondering whether it's a threat, most whelks are predatory (assuming it is indeed a whelk).

well i don't have the best camera in the world but all give it a try. I hope there not predatory. If so im guilty of not doing my research and trusting the LFS. They told me they were just sand sifters no common name or anything

From what i can see, it resembles Pusiostoma (Emgina) mendicaria, but i think it's likely something else.

Ron Shimek wrote a nice article on whelks HERE that may be of help in ID-ing it. You could always hook up with him directly too, he's a great guy.

whats a siphon? Well im pretty sure they were predatory. I saw one yesterday it had its foot wrapped around on of my smaller snails. Not to long after that it was dead. Well anyway my friend here has a pedatory tank he took them off my hands. I really didn't want to take them out and flush them or anything like that. He said they would be ok in his tank he has other snails similiar to them and they are fine. Sucks i lost about a dozen snails to them had 6 of them all this time it was them killing them. I guess i learned something new today. Thanks for all your help

It still amazes me that many LFS fail at helping hobbyist and continue giving poor advise and pass off living creatures without due consideration for them, their new owners, or the inhabitants of the tank where they will be housed.

Sorry you lost your good snails Eric. I am glad to hear you found a suitable home for the predatory ones.

A siphon is a little tube that sticks up like a snorkel.
