    protein skimmer

I built my own protein skimmer and right I am pushing1400 gph. My question has to do with the break in period for skimmers. What is an acceptable time for the break in of a protein skimmer. Just to let you know my skimmer is 52 inches tall and six inches around. The skimmer is made out of pvc. I have three pumps hooked up to it and can push a total of 1900 gph. I guess my next question is should I push 1900 gph or just 1400 gph?

Since your skimmer is a DIY, I believe the answer to your question lies in the performance you witness in the skim-mate it pulls out. That will be determined by the bio-load and the age of the system. It would impractical and possibly impossible for us to make that determination. With that in mind, your skimmer must be a beast. We really like pictures of beasts here on TR.

I agree tuning it is the best way to go. Skimmer manufactures always design their skimmer for a specific size of pump. Did you model yours after a commercial skimmer? If so that would be a good starting place. Post up those pix please!

I actually got the idea from a guy on utube who built one out of pvc, but his was smaller than the one I built. Here are the pictures you requested.
