Please Help! My Hippo is sick!

Hi there, I am a beginner reefer. I bought a juvenile hippo tang a month ago and he has been great until this morning.
Last night I did a water change and didn't mix up enough water ahead of time to refil with (I accidentaly used my smaller rubbermaid tote to mix the water) and so had to quickly make more, I think in my panic I was too off on temp of the water I added. Needless to say, I got up this morning to my hippo having ick.
I didn't know the importance of a quarentene tank until now (The LFS has not once mentioned the subject to me, and that WAS where I was getting all my advice from) and unfortunately I do not have one. I will work on resolving that in the near future, but for now can anyone please advise me on how to treat him without hurting my corals, coca worms etc. The rest of my fish look great thank goodness.

There is a product called Kick Ich (I think). Read the label BEFORE buying it. I THINK it is supposed to be reef safe. Maybe someone else will chime in here. I’ve never used it.

Great article Dick! I remember reading this early on and it is worth rereading every now and again. Added to my favorites!

That article is great. I don't know anyone who has had any luck with Kick Ich. AFAIK, hypo and copper are the only reliable treatments. Depending on the fish and environment, it may clear up on it's own.

Hi I am not so great with the computers, so I am having a bit of a difficult time navigating this site, I only found your query by fluke!. Well, my hippo is still ok, but being I had no hospital tank and I have invertibrates, I was not able to find a solution to deal with the ick, I have discouvered through this whole ordeal the importance of a quarentine tank and will be setting one up asap. In the meantime, I am sure the spores have dropped by now, and the rest of the tank will be at risk, I can only hope that they are healthy enough and have a good enough slime coating to resist the re-development of the parasite... time will tell I suppose. I have had a friend who had luck with http://www.microbelift.com/products/...herbtana-reef/. It is not supposed to kill the parasite but to boost the immune system. I haven't used it myself but it might be worth a try.

i have heard that kick-ich has worked my uncle who has a 210 gallon reef tank has used it and it worked the only thing with kick-ich is that u have to treat the tank over a longer period of time than say if u get one of the copper based ones

Just be sure NOT to use copper based medications in a reef tank or you'll get rid of more than ich

ya but i dont think kick-ich has copper in it thats why its reef safe but ya i know about not using copper in a reef tank lol

Kick-ich doesn't have copper but I have only heard a few cases where it has worked. I don't know if doesn't work because people don't use it correctly or if it works because sometimes the fish are hardy enough to fight ich off.
