    I prefer rum.

My tank runs fine with no nitrates present so I have an if its not broke, don't fix it attitude.

I have started to use vodka and so far I have not had any adverse reactions in my tank. I am also starting off slow, so as not to harm my system. I know everyone wants to know why vodka dosing. I have been plagued with high nitrates and have tried almost everything on the planet to control them and nothing has done anything to permanently reduce my nitrate problem. I also have been doing 30% water changes to no avail. So, I thought I would give it a try, but the thing everyone needs to do is start off slowly and keep a journal of when and how much vodka they are dosing as not to overdose and harm their system. I will let you know how goes.

You won't ever be able to reduce nitrates by water changes. You have to reduce it at the source. I do that by lightly stocking.
