    Tank breed or Wild?

Just wanted some thoughts on getting tank raised or wild clowns? I want to pair them with a Bubble tip but have read tank raised clowns are less likely to go to Anemones. One shop in town has wild caught and swears the tank raised will not bother with it. The other shop only sells tank raised stock and said they will live in it given time. I am sure one of you can provide me with some insight or personal experience.

well if the option is there to not purge the oceans, then id do it bud.
Clowns & anems need to adjust to eachother anyways, so i dont believe there is anything dictating speed of this in the wild vs captive scene. If there is, ive never heard of it.

if there is EVER an option to buy tank raised ... buy tank raised. besides not being taken from the ocean, the are almost always healthier and since tank raised ... use to be in a tank. they may or may not host a nem, but my 2 extreme ORA tank raised misbarred clowns hosted mine within 48 hours.

I agree with the above, tank raised is always the better choice, they are adapted better, and have a better chance at living. I have two tank raised Ocellaris clowns and a BTA but they do not host the anemone they host my open brain. I think its pretty cool and my coral don't mind ether. Just give them time sooner or later they are bound to host something.

I agree buying tank raised is always preferable for the reasons stated above. In the wild clowns always host anemones. BUT, all bets are off in an aquarium, even with wild caught.

Well I hope the Bubble tip is where they end up, I plan on getting the clown tommorow. The BT is still looking for its spot in the tank, I am surprised how quickly it moves. If nothing else the Pepermints seem to like it and seem as if they are follwing the BT.

my BTA keeps moving around, but NEVER in the front of the tank
for whatever reason, it likes the side with very low flow and even lower light. Its a baby, recently split at the LFS, dont know if this has anything to do with it, but I hope it will eventually come out!

Mine has found a spot in the back corner it seems to like. I am a little concerned with all the attention being paid to the BT by the Pepermints. The large one seems to be all over it. At first I thought it was cleaning the BT. The BT keeps trying to hide and makes itself as small as possible When the Pep gets on it.

It makes sense that it would shrink up when the peps are on it, they are foreign to it.

I am waiting on adding the clowns until I have my algae problem contained. Funny thing is I have a Green Cromis that loves the BT and spends every night in it.

Chromis are actually directly related to clowns as well as other damselfish... the are all anemonefish.

There are pros and cons to tank raised clowns, but the fact that they are not wild caught outweighs all the cons IMO. One method I have seen successful is to place your anemone and clowns together into a hang in tank breeder. this limits the movement of both the clowns and the anemone, and they are essentially forced into symbiosis. This is particularly helpful for tank raised clowns that do not have "experience" in hosting. Keep in mind that there are far more wild clownfish without host anemones on the reef than there are clowns with anemones...

Picture the begging scenes of Finding Nemo. Where is the anemone? Where is their cave? If you can somewhat mimic this in your tank you will have better luck getting them to form their bond. If your anemone lands close to an aggressive fishes territory, it will defeat the purpose of the anemone, and the clowns will not host.

If your anemone goes somewhere you dont want it, I suggest the powerhead method. Simply use a direct flow powerhead (maxijets are great) and point it directly at the anemone. It will move in fairly short order. Every time it sits where you don't want it, repeat the process.

Once your anemone is in it's place, the clowns can start making their beds

I have a mushroom leather that has gotten 5 inches across. they host in it during the day and hide under it at night. I don't have an anenome since it is a 20G nano. At a local shop, they have a large frogspawn in a 90 g that hosts a couple of clowns. They are tank raised, I got my clowns from them.
