    sick seahorse

Hi, I was just given a seahorse by a friend, and when I first got it it was eating fine and swimming around. I set up a 10 gal. for right now because it is really small. I have a 56 gal that I used the water from to set up the 10. Right now my sea horse is not eating, isn't curling its tail and just drags itself along the bottom. I have no idea what to do to help him live. Please help me!

What kind of seahorse? What are your water parameters? Temperature?

I would also go over to http://seahorse.org/ There are lots of pony experts there and there is usually someone to help in the Emergency forum. I am not a pony keeper and they do require specialized care. Be sure to post as much info as you can so you don't have to wait while they ask you the questions about parameters, etc.

OK I'll check that out. I am not sure what kind it is. its just dark brown with gray bands down its body. The temp is 72 and not sure on parameters, but it's a 10 gal.

did you cycle the tank? just using old water basically does nothing but add whatever pollutants have built up in the source tank. the bacteria you culture in a cycled tank is NOT waterborne. the SH may be suffering from NH3 burns to its gills. SH have closed opercula and are super sensitive to certain pollutants.

where did your friend get the SH? i suspect it's a pen-raised "kelloggi", which, to be honest have had dismal survival records, and need to be treated the same as wild caught specimens, as they have been exposed to untreated seawater.

how long has it been in there?

    have you done any WC's?

is there any cured LR in the tank? if so how much?

    is the SH breathing heavily?

you'll need to know your parameters, as that's the first thing you'll be asked in the ER over at the org. (trust me, i've been a mod there for years).

first, and foremost, try a large WC.

    pix help too...
    Greg
