    Question PVC verses flexible tubing?

    Nice video.

I was wondering which is better, PVC piping or the clear flexible tubing? I guess the clear flexible tubing allows you to see inside and is easier to work with. But, the PVC seems like it is more sturdy and allows me to fit things (with all the 90 degree joint) into a specific area better.

Is one better than the other? Is one more quiet then the other (my aquarium is in the family room)? I also read that bends like a 90 degree bend decreases the flow rate and requires more pump head (?) pressure. Is there different areas I should use one verse the other? Just curious.

there is actually flex tubing that is not clear and thats usually better. the problem with clear tubing is that light gets in it, and that promotes algae growth, and its really hard to get in there and clean it.

i know it can reduce restrictions, but as for noise levels, i cant comment on that

Hi I just fit my tank with a diy spay bar like in the video but I was wondering how to calculate the most efficient number of drilled holes so that I don't restrict the flow but still have plenty of pressure out of the holes. I have ehiem pump, 1262, I think. Pumps 900 gal per hr. I just figured it has output hole of 1/2" so I figured 16 1/8" holes to equal basicallyb1/2" sq total. That sound right?

The area of the holes is the same. I am not very good at plumbing so I would wait for inpur from one of the others before you start drilling.

    hey bud.

ok so first your talking bout 900gph (3406lt per hour)
I have know idea what your head loss value is, so determining what actually makes the push through that diameter is a pure guess.

second to that, thats actually quite a chunk of change being forced though such a narrow diameter to produce those numbers .

Thirdly, im no expert on fractions, however it seems you have drilled plenty to compensate for only 1/2 inch.

You tell me, how the flow look? & further more, does your pump seem like its restricted?

flow seems fine. i know i haven't drilled too many holes cause it's still got pretty good pressure from them. more concerned about restriction. what does a restricted pump do different than one without restriction?

well i just set it up tuesday so wear and tear wouldn't show up yet but i was hoping to avoid wearing it out early. oh well, guess time will tell. really like the spray bars though. prior to this i just had pvc elbows that i could twist to direct flow but it left too little flow in the center of the tank i think.
