    120G Crash

Well my TR friends, I spent my entire Saturday tearing down my 120g.

I moved the tank in early December for carpet to be installed - big mistake.
The swishing and jarring of DSB sent the tank into total chaos. I was doing several large water changes a week, changing socks daily, running two skimmers and a UV light and I could not stay ahead of the battle.
Within two weeks of the move I lost my most prized Regal Tang, banner fish and yellow tang. These fish had been with me for three years.
The 120g is going on Craigslist and I will start setting up the 175. It will be bare bottom with a remote DSB that can be disconnected at any given time.

awww sausage kiddo, i really am. Stepped out for a Texan steak & never came home.

How do you attribute it to the disruption or the move though?

I'm sorry to hear about your 120 gallon crashing but I know your bigger tank is going to be awesome and healthy as ever.

V - I attribute it to the DSB being disturbed as nothing else changed and if it had simply been the fish didn't like the disruption the chaos would have stopped with their death.

Thanks Ray and Pat and yes I will have more time to concentrate on the new build now that I am not fighting the battle with the 120. All remaining live stock is in a 30g QT and will remain there until the 175 is ready. All live rock that did not have coral attached has been cleaned and is now dead rock!

ive heard of some issues when fish bury deep into the anerobic zones, however ive never heard of total nuke fest babe. Looking at it logicly, unless there was some major leaching from the disruption that happened to be locked away due to the bed density, the worst case is oxidation of the anerobic bacteria, & hence a spike there after of ammonia as they die off & the follow on with trates cause you seriously weakened your converters.

its got to be something else. could have been pure stress for the fish. you loose any corals

Hi Rhonda, sorry to hear about your tank and fish. Congrats on your new set up, I can't wait to see what you do with it. I am doing a remote dsb as well, seems like the way to go.

Thanks Missy. The smell of the DSB when I removed it on Sat. was horrible. For me, that cannot be a good thing in the DT .

sorry to hear about the crash. i just got done moving my tank about 1 month ago and have been really stressed since then making sure that everything is still going to recover from the move but so far so good so i think i am in the clear. cant wait to see the progress for the new tank though. like everyone else said, now you can completely focus on the new one instead of split interests.

Rhonda, That really stinks, no pun intended. DSBs will stink when disturbed to the extent your’s was disturbed. That’s normal. It’s the Anaerobic area, rotten egg smell actually doing it’s thing lowering NO-3 Nitrate. I would like to know more. When you say the tank went into total chaos, what exactly do you mean, water parameters I assume? Can you be more specific?

How long had the 120 been set up?
