I had a Remora on a combined volume system of 20 gallons, and wouldn't trust it to skim much more than that. there are much better HOB skimmers out there. Check out Octopus or Deltec.

Other than cost, what are your thoughts on pros and cons on the 3 mentioned?

It's all about the technology IMO. I just don't think injection skimmers work as well compared to venturi, needle wheel or even becketts. They require more powerful pumps to operate, and aren't as efficient. I've had 2 injection skimmers and was not at all happy with either. The only 2 HOB skimmers I've ever owned were the Remora, and a Coralife SuperSkimmer. Both were terrible. I know one person who uses an Octopus HOB skimmer, and at least 2 who use Deltec, and they are head and shoulders above anything I've used. There may be other good brands out there as well, but I know those are 2.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread Michael, but I am also looking for a HOB skimmer. Almost bought the remora then saw this thread. My 2 biggest concernes were, how much space a pump would take up in my 10 gal. and finding something that could be used on a larger system if I upgrade down the road.

Well it seems as though alot of us seem to have the same questions. I have read alot of reviews about the remora and it has got nothing but flying colors. My lfs ( yes I know we are supposed to take what they say like a grain of salt in the ocean) recommended it to me as one of the best skimmers out there. Again I know how much we are supposed to listen to them lol. But it seems like there is a lack of opinions on hob skimmers on this page or any where out there really. My only problem with the others is finding hob styles AND dang they are freaking expensive! So do we have any other opinions out there for us limited space reefers?

well i took your advice and got an octopus 300f and absolutely love it.......and after more research i realize i was looking at cheaper made skimmers. you get what you pay for i guess. this thing seems to be a very hard working skimmer. think i will start a thread on setting up and breaking it in. the directions are a major complant because there really arent any, and you cant find much online either.

Awesome... I still havent purchased a skimmer yet but am looking at the octopus also. I was looking at the model 100 with the surface skimmer at a cost of $125. The remora with the skimmer box is $200. Cant wait to hear your opinion on yours.

the 100 model wouldve been better for a 55gal.

just got my aqua c remora pro and all seems to be well. only been up running 3 days and i am already pulling skimmate out. just trying to dial it in at this point for a dryer skimmate but all in all seem to be pleased. i am sure there are better out there but it is tough to justify some of the prices for them. they just kinda get outrages at times. sorry just my thoughts.

no really, i totally agree with you kaymanager, its crazy what some companies want for skimmers. we see them as a necessity so i guess they can charge whatever, But my aquarium is 3/4 where i want it to be and ive already hit the $4000 range so i didnt cut corners on the skimmer.

i think you have it exactly right. they preach and preach dont cut corners on your skimmer so we see a skimmer priced for 200 300 500+ and say to ourselves" oh my system is gonna suck if i dont spend as much money as i have on this" thats why it took me 4 months plus to finally just decide to go for one and either be happy or suffer the consequences.
