on the OSFF, they aren't simply "hard" to wean onto prepared foods, i'd say that even if you have a LOT of time and patience, AND you acquire specimens that aren't already in bad shape, you probably have a 30% - 40% chance of success at it. Renee really pulled out all the stops in terms of research and effort to get that female weaned (we had a pair, but the male starved to death, even tho he showed more initial promise).

please realize that this isn't meant to be negative, but rather an attempt to impress upon folks that this fish is indeed an "expert-only who has a lot of time on their hands" species, and even then, the odds aren't in your favor. so unless you have a large SPS reef (and don't mind the fish picking at the polyps), or are willing to keep the fish in a species setup for weaning, and spend the time to do so, i'd pass on this fish.

while i'm posting, here's one of the new fish on the block...meet the sea goblin (Inimicus (species is most likely) japonicus. this fish belongs to the same family as the ghoul, but is from a different genus:

    diggin' in

    why i dig in

i'm a big, tuff fish (did i scare ya?)

LOL...that would be Inimicus japonicus. i originally had it ID'd as I. didactylus, but Frank Marini (THE scorp guru) has it pegged as most likely I. japonicus due to a couple of small differences. I. japonicus shows up in the hobby less frequently as it's a Japanese fish, which is actually partially why i ruled it out.

ID-ing scorps can be challenging, to say the least, altho that's part of the fun!

LOL from what it looked like it was two names. I guess I need to remember those Latin names.

just for Moby, here are a couple of older shots of the OSFF. you can see how painfully skinny she was in some of them, even after she started eating well:

note the lack of muscle in her dorsal area, but she does have a full belly

here's the male that didn't make it:

Our 100g wide tank is really the perfect size for the volitans. He's just loving the 24" depth. They were originally in the 60g and then, in year 3, he outgrew it as we turned our attention to nutrition.

    What size is your monitor?

i think Renee was asking for your monitor resolution setting (e.g. 800x600, 1024x768, etc.).

i just passed the resolution on to Renee, so she'll make you a copy of the photo that will fit your screen.

as for the lion, a 30 gal is pretty tight for P. antenatta. it's doable in a 40B but there won't really be any fudge factor, and if you have other fish, the bioload will be intense. personally, i think a 55 would be a better choice. if you haven't read it, do a search on Frank Marini Lionfish and you'll get a link to his excellent article on them. i haven't read a better one to date, and he is indeed THE scorp guru IMHO. in fact, he has a new book coming out, and you may recognize a few pix in it.

we know the owners of most of the LFS fairly well, but it's really a matter of what the wholesalers have, and unfortunately, due to the economy, most of the wholesalers are pretty much stocking "meat and potatoes" fish that they can turn around quickly. we do find some of our fish at the LFS's tho. that being said, we've obtained some of our specimens thru DD (coincidentally, we know the person who takes their pix), and have had pretty good luck so far.

if you can find a juvie to grow up, snatch it up and get it settled and eating. our volitans was a little "peanut" and started out in a 6 gal cube! of course, it has outgrown 3 tanks (6, 24, 60).

    Pat,

here's a pic of the volitans in its first tank...compare the size of the fish to the thermometer:

BTW, i was SO torn between that fish and a SWEET juvie antenatta in the tank next to it...obviously, i went with the "volie"...

i dunno about each tank, but we've had the fish for over 3 years. it did a few growth spurts here and there, but when Renee got really geeky on the nutrition aspect of keeping our preds, it put on close to 2", so we set up the 100 gal "wide" (48 x 24 x 20) for it.

even tho volitans are common, this fish is one of our faves.
